2005-08-12 09:14:00 | Hi all I'm a bit confused. Never had this happen before: I update MS patches thru' Control Panel and select Custom install. 8 critical Updates were found on "Update Tuesday" this week and I thought I'd installed them. However when I read my update history today I see that several from the most recent updates have a red cross beside them and when I click on this I get "Error Code 0x80246005" which means a network connection was not available. I don't have a network so I guess it's a MS network? I usually do one at a time but as they were all quite small I opted to do them all together. Mistake? (I'm on dial up) Didn't want to bother anyone so read all i could online and found little but a reference to KB986727 causing users probs and that MS had removed it from the updates. This one is listed in my Add/Remove and IS installed. Problem is, some updates are downloaded but not installed and Windows Update 'THINKS' they're installed as it no longer finds any updates for me. Do I simply uninstall the most recent updates, those that failed including the troublesome KB986727, from Add/Remove and then return to MS updates and get them again? This won't cause any conflicts will it? Please reassure me.........it's been a stressful day Thank you

2005-08-12 09:28:00 | are you running as a used with administrator properties when you installing the updates? which means a network connection was not available can you still access the internet? eg pcworld.co.nz.... etc... Also try clearing the internet explorer cache and history, the temp folders. and then try to re-run the update service

I've never had trouble installing updates before. I suspect it is the KB986727 patch messin' with me. What I'd like to know is: if I remove all yesterday's updates, including the troublesome one in Add/Remove, and then go to MS Updates again will I be able to get those same updates (minus KB986727) again? Is this acceptable? I'm sorry if I wasn't clear......... Thank you! |

2005-08-12 09:47:00 | it should require you to re-install them again. :2cents:

2005-08-12 09:48:00 | Yup it should be OK. Altho I installed what was on windowsupdate site no prob at all. As well as the 896727 update. Then I went to the MS download site and got the 896727 update again. (As it was a dead link before). Altho I dont know what was wrong with 896727 before, I dont use IE besides using Windowsupdate. Just uninstall what u want and select custom not express and untick the ones u dont want to install. Altho I dont think it was a prob with the file, (altho MS say it was corrupt), it just didnt exist on the MS site. If you wanted to download it.

2005-08-12 10:25:00 | Thank you all! I'll stick with plan A then - but I had considered your option Oxie (but will save that up if it all turns to custard in a few moments!!) I'd be interested to know what you think actually caused the problem though if it wasn't that patch. I use IE only for updates too - use Opera mostly and FF occasionally. Everything's updated including Ewido, Spybot S&D, Kerio (fully stealthed) and Avast. Curiouser and curiouser said Alice
