| 381497 | 2005-08-15 23:58:00 | I'm changing soon from xtra wireless internet service to adsl. The offer at the moment is free modem (1 ethernet port, 1 USB port). Now, I have a computer which my son said I could have as he is in the UK. His suggestion was (and he would help me as he is an IT person) I should set it up as a firewall or server, running Linux. I have 2 network cards in my computer at present and I can see one will be required for the internet connection (I don't want to go USB with this)and one will be required for my wireless LAN access point. I don't particularly want to fork out $159 for a 2 port router when I can get one thrown in for free. So, when I get around to my sons proposal, can you see it working? as say; internet to modem, to Linux box, to Windows box and off that one, my wireless LAN. My windows computer is 1.6 Intel Sons computer 400 mhz Intel (would probably need a bigger hard drive, but has heaps of ram). |

| 381499 | 2005-08-16 00:26:00 | Using the ethernet port on the free dsl-302g will act as a firewall. If you really want to use a linux PC as a router / firewall check out IPCop (http://www.ipcop.org) as that is what it's made for. |

Tell him to play with his own servers... |
