381448 2005-08-15 10:20:00 I’ve just been given a brand new Laser USB 2.0 flash drive.

Wonderful, but reading the instructions is somewhat confusing.

In the “features and specification” section of the instructions it clearly says No drivers are required for ME (My OS), 2000, XP, etc…………….

Then, straight below, it gives installation instructions for Win ME and Win98se which require the drivers to be downloaded from the “Laserco” website.

OK, everything else works fine on the USB ports (Digicam, Radio transmitter etc) without the installation of drivers, so I plugged it in, but nothing other than a flicker of the cursor. No sign of it in My Computer or System/Devices.

Oh well, part 2 said I needed a driver so off I went to the Laserco website and downloaded 5 meg of driver, unzipped it into a folder, double clicked setup.exe and up comes a message “WinME does not require a driver installation, installation will be terminated! Grrrrrrrrrrrr!

Read further instructions and here we’re told that if any problems are encountered then E-Mail tech@laserco.com.au and they will advise.

Beauty, I send of a letter explaining the problem and in reply I get zip,0,nothing, no response, which, given the rest of the carry on doesn’t really surprise me.

So, have any of you good folk had similar trouble, or can make any suggestions.

381450 2005-08-15 10:32:00 I take it, youre using Windows ME? Does it appear in My computer / whatever ME uses?

What does it say in device manager? Any entry appear here? And I take it, u have USB 2 onboard?

381451 2005-08-15 10:46:00 Tried to PM you Lucy but having trouble. I'll try again in a minute.

Speedy, the other USB devices work OK and no there is no sign of it anywhere. (My Computer or Device Manager) Not sure about USB 2 but it's supposed to work on USB 1.1 anyway. Just slower.

Don't you hate it when outfits market something before they iron out all the bugs? :

381452 2005-08-15 10:56:00 Has it got some kind of button / switch on it somewhere?? That needs to be flicked for it to work? Speedy Gonzales (78)
381453 2005-08-16 02:42:00 It will almost certainly need a driver for Windows ME. ME is like W98, still based on an earlier DOS than W2k etc. A write protect switch won't do anything for the OS until the OS can see the device. Graham L (2)
381454 2005-08-16 02:46:00 hmm.....odd.....as I recall all the usb 'flash' devices i've used were recognised in winME perfectly well wihtout drivers........98se yep it'll need drivers but ME shouldnt...... drcspy (146)
381455 2005-08-16 04:35:00 Outcome of this saga .

Don’t know whether the guy’s at laserco monitor this site but I got a E-Mail from them timed at 21:03hrs last night apologising for not replying sooner and advising that WinME definitely did not need a driver despite half the instructions being to the contrary .

They advised that they had not had one complaint about their product loading with WinME and maybe I’d got the one in a million dud . Now that would be my luck so the thing to do was test it on another machine with WinME on it . Took a bit of finding, but found a mate with a notebook running this OS so plugged it in and away it went, no problem at all . B… . . , not the unit! So thinking lets give it another try I took it home plugged it in and away it went . Dahhhh, what the? Ok, now whilst pondering the problem it occurred to me that when attaching to the notebook I’d used a Male-Female cord that came with the flash drive and when I’d retried it on my computer I’d again used this Male-Female cord, whereas in the first instance I’d just plugged the flash drive into the USB port . So, I remove the cord and plugged the darn thing back into the USB port direct and no go! Wiggle it, do as you please still no go . Replace the cord and away we go . Now, I’m perfectly at ease using the cord all the time, all my other USB devices have one, but wonder if I’m missing something here? What is there about the cord that makes the difference? At the first opportunity I’ll try plugging it directly in the mates notebook and see what happens there?

Are these cords crossovers or something?

Anyway, a big thanks to all those who tried to help .

381456 2005-08-16 04:42:00 that's weird.........are you sure you plugged it in the right way 'up' without the cord ?......you MUST be careful cause if you didn't you are likel to 'blowup' your usb port.......and maybe the device drcspy (146)
381457 2005-08-16 04:55:00 From what I have here, you cant plug a USB device / plug in upside down / back to front .

As it wont fit . It will only plug in one way . Or not at all .
