381165 2005-08-15 03:04:00 Considering a new pc with EITHER a 200 gb hard drive partitioned 40/160 (the 160 for storage of video, photos and music) OR two drives - 160gb + 40gb).
What advantages over the other does each alternative have (apart from price)?
Would appreciate any thoughts on this.

381167 2005-08-15 03:14:00 Advantage of partitioning, is if u put files u want/need on the 2nd partition, if the system crashes they'll stay intact .

You can still reinstall windows/whatever on the main partition . And the files on the 2nd/3rd etc partition will still be there . If you have one 200 GB (not partitioned), the system crashes, byebye files .

You'll have to get them all over again . which can be time comsuming, if u have to download them . (Esp if ur on 56k!)

I use 2 hdd's here 1 120 GB SATA, and 1 80 GB IDE .

BOTH are partitioned, 20 GB for XP, the other 1/2 of it, I use for video editing, the 80 GB, 20 GB 1 partition and the other 59-60GB . Mostly used for updates for XP/Office etc . I can still format C, do a clean install, and the files I have for video editing are still on the other 1/2 of the 120GB hdd .

BUT there's nothing wrong with having more than 1 hdd . If I could afford it, I would get 4-5 250GB hdd's and hook them up to a USB 2 hub .

And have them external .

Thank you . I'll follow your example on this and get two drives and partition them as you suggest .

381170 2005-08-15 04:38:00 Thanks for your input, Corbin. I think I'll go with the two drives and partition each of them.
Regards - Krsd.
