2005-08-17 10:38:00 | As much as I loathe the passport system and its lord and master Bill Gates, I have bowed down and joined due to the fact that otherwise I cannot talk to my friends whom are not as enlightened as I am. So, to avoid installing the dreaded messenger on my XP Pro machine that I spent some time removing when I got it, I have installed Trillian instead - the problem is I find Trillian has crappy smilies and is patchy at best as to hooking into the msn network - messenger almost never fails, trillian often needs several tries to logon. Anyone use a different client I could try that they think is good? Cheers.

2005-08-17 10:48:00 | I use MSN Messenger 7 with Messenger Plus and Stuffplug NG - and it's great. Can't say any other program I've tried is anywhere near as good - if you're so concerned, just use it for chatting to your friends, and only that.

2005-08-17 10:57:00 | You can always go with the open source multi-protocol IM called Gaim (gaim.sourceforge.net). However, I suspect if you find Trillians smilies a tad lacking, you might be disappointed in Gaims selection. You can add extra smilies though. | Jen (38) | |
2005-08-17 12:46:00 | Or you could try IM2: http://www.im2.com/ Much better than Trillian in every way.

2005-08-17 22:36:00 | I have installed Trillian instead - the problem is I find Trillian has crappy smilies so why not just change the smilies ? its fully skinnable and you can change similies sounds etc.

IM2 has a few annoying bugs which don't stop you from using it, so I presume it is still in beta. I find it is very good to use but some of the more obscure features are buggy, at least on my os (Win2K, Win98SE). That said I'm still happy with the job it does for me. Very pretty and quite functional once you figure out the essentials, it has plenty of options and features which take some time to find your way around. One of the bugs is that it sometimes seems to forget the way you have set up the features the first time you do that but repeating the setup again fixes it.???????? Nothing at stake anyway you can always uninstall it if you don't like it. Doesn't have any spyware that I have noticed and I am quite observant and watchful about this issue. Sends files well between users and that is a bit plus for me. |

2005-08-18 00:09:00 | It's not about pride its about removing an extremely annoying piece of software . If it was about pride or some personal crusade I would be running Linux . I loathe passport as the license agreement is extremely ambiguous and restrictive and give Microsoft too many powers . I loathe MSN Messenger as it as a nasty little piece of software that gets more and more bloated every version change (I think it's up to 7MB now compared to 2-3 for Trilliam and IM2) and they force you to download the newer version after awhile or else it won't work - which on older PC's and dial-up connections is murder to download and run . And don't tell me to get Jetstream - I can't as I live outside their coverage area which also means my dialup works at about half the speed as those of you who are city dwellers . And I do run Linux on some machines but unfortunately in my line of work there is some software that requires windows . (mainly IE to access government online databases that security protocols only support IE - ironic I know, and also several diagnostic applications I use that control connected devices and instruments) . Here endeth the rant . Oh, and tweak'e - didn't know that reskinning produced diff smilies - it has heaps as standard, but they are hard to see and basically I can't tell if I'm being winked at orr frwoned at - and you don't need to be told what trouble that can cause lol .
