381763 2005-08-17 05:03:00 DVD Drives looking for a reliable cheapie

I found this (pcsale.co.nz) and it seems to be the cheapest and does most of what i think a DVD writer should, comes from a reliable brand, But it does seem rather cheap.

I an not after the fastest, with the most bells and whistles, i really just want a good reliable one for reading dvds and writing the odd one

Cheers

381764 2005-08-17 05:33:00 it looks ok, I have a Samsung LCD monitor and also a Samsung TV, build quality etc are very good.

I just purchased a Liteon 1693S DVD for new computer as all reviews said it was the 'best buy'... about $85.00 and so far great, plays all my odd old CDs/CDR/CDRW without a hitch.

381766 2005-08-17 06:01:00 yeah I used price spy to find this originally,

did the liteon one come with burning software?

I have had good service from all the samsung products i have used in the past, it just seemed curiously cheap

Anyway thanks I'll go and have a look through some mags for reviews

381767 2005-08-17 06:26:00 the Liteon came with full version of Nero and also Power DVD, it also has included interchangeable beige and black face plates.

I got mine from DTC computers in Dominion Rd (Auck)... sorry, when I looked up the invoice it was $99.00 incl GST.

381768 2005-08-17 06:28:00 Samsung is not a good brand for DVDRWs.
You get what you pay for.

381769 2005-08-17 08:49:00 I've put 20 or so of these
LG's (www.etccomputers.co.nz)
in systems over the last few months and also use 2 of them personally without a problem so far

If I remember correctly Sony DRU-800A is a repackaged version of the above.
Thorough review here (www.cdrinfo.com). Its a little pricey overall. But plays most formats.

Theres a third party program that can apparently disable the DVD region limitator setting for both the Sony and the Liteon... I've never found it but then again, VLC plays all my DVD's.

381771 2005-08-17 22:26:00 I brought the same model a month ago, it installed well and seems to be working without problem. The Nero software bundled with it is cool.

Brought mine from the devils-own PC store , SupercheapPC (yeah..yeah ...hold back throwing the rotten fruit please) .
