2005-08-16 10:20:00 | I previously had Firefox running successfuly on my laptop. This was achieved not without some effort and the only way I could get it to work was an arcane setting, that might have been posted on this forum. But I have forgotten it  I found it necessary to do a clean install of WinXP on my laptop, but can't get Firefox to work. No matter what URL I use it throws up a scrambled page or reverts to a messed up kind of Google. Its notthe firewall and I am on a network. But it has worked before on the network and in any case I had the same trouble with my desktop PC when I tried to install Mozilla and that was pre network; the same & now forgotten setting allowed me to set up Mozilla successfully on the desktop PC. Can someone help me here please? I am using Maxthon as browser on the laptop, but much prefer Firefox.

2005-08-16 10:28:00 | Does Firefox work in Firefox safe mode ? Try creating a new profile for firefox and see if that works. see kb.mozillazine.org for more info.

2005-08-17 06:22:00 | Here is your previous post on the same matter if that helps you - Trying to get Firefox to work (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz). :) No, that doesn't work this time round. But thanks for finding the link for me Jen. I've also used wmoore's link & Safari's too. Thanks guys. But all to no avail. I've re-installed 3 times. Once with ver. 1.0.4 and twice with 1.0.6. Totally cleaned out all reference to Firefox from program files & registry (as far as I can tell) before re-installing. It doesn't matter what URL I type in, it just goes to Google. If I click on any link, it goes to Google (Google is featured on the Firefox start). No different in "safe mode". I am perplexed. It can't be network as IE & Maxthon work. Can't be firewall either. There has to be a setting there somewhere which will make it OK. Anyone struck anything like this?

2005-08-17 06:51:00 | When you say it goes to Google do you mean it just stays at Google. Strange problem but have you checked the obvious that you are not working Offline From File/Work Offline - normally this would warn you if you were but funny things happen. Check Preferences/General/Connection settings - Select Direct connection to the internet.

2005-08-17 21:08:00 | Everything I try, doesn't work  . I've put the laptop back in it's bag and put it away out of sight; better that than out the window and it's not its fault. Anyway, its not as if I don't have a browser that works. Not ideal, but with care IE (or its clone Maxthon) works fine. So thankyou; people for helping me. I'll resurrect this problem another day when I'm in a better frame of mind.
