381897 2005-08-17 16:07:00 Think about your setup.

Post back with the type of internet connection you have, including modem.

What are the local IP's of every device??

Maybe even draw a topo in paint to show how each device is connected to each other. Something like this (www.silvertech.co.nz)

381898 2005-08-18 04:16:00 wait do u have the internet hooked up to one of ur computers or to the router? CorbinH (37)
381899 2005-08-18 17:59:00 i have the router plugged into my modem which is a 2meg line from ntl which is plugged into my this comp ,i cant plug the router into my PC as it has no ethernet port, this computer and the other one which is upstairs both connect to the router through 54mbs wireless cards. I have got the IP address for this comp but on the other one upstairs it doesnt have one it says unassigned, do i assign it myself or will the computer do it automatically. mickeyc (6724)
381900 2005-08-18 21:10:00 You should set user-assigned (static) IP addresses, otherwise if you let XP do it you will probably find it either won't find a DHCP server (in which case the IP will be something like 169.254.xxx.xxx), and/or will assign an IP outside of your network address range. 381901 2005-08-18 21:13:00 You should set user-assigned (static) IP addresses, otherwise if you let XP do it you will probably find it either won't find a DHCP server (in which case the IP will be something like 169.254.xxx.xxx), and/or will assign an IP outside of your network address range.
When doing my own home network (Win 98SE, Linux, and occassionally hookup the WinXP Pro lappie) all have static IPs that I have set myself. I have also turned off the DHCP server ability in the router (D-Link).

So all IPs (including the router) are within the same range - 192.xxx.xxx.xxx; and the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0

381902 2005-08-19 03:26:00 were abouts do i enter the static IP and will this allow file and internet sharing? mickeyc (6724)
381903 2005-08-19 15:46:00 would having the windows firewall stop the other computer trying to connect to this one? mickeyc (6724)
381904 2005-08-20 02:11:00 probably not, but try disabling it just in case & if that is your problem, download kerio personal firewall Greven (91)

Go to Control Panel>and double click on Network Connections. Double click on the connection you are using then click on Properties. Double click on Internet Protocol TCP/IP. Click on Use the following IP address then type in the IP you want to assign that machine (eg 192.168.0.2 [only the last number changes between each computer]).
Under submask type 255.55.255.0 (this is the same on both computers).
For gateway, type in the IP address of your wireless router (usually 192.168.0.1, can be 10.0.0.1 or similar).
Under DNS either choose asign DNS automatically, or put in the DNS IP of your ISP.
