382671 2005-08-21 04:55:00 This Acer Notebook computer - Model MS2132, when the power switch is depressed, nothing happens, not even the POST, nothing appears on the LCD screen, other than the noise from the CD rom driver spinning. It doesn't start up at all. When I pulled out the AC power cord, no led indicator lights and it doesn't respond to the power switch when it is depressed. I therefore suspect the battery is complete dead. Is it true that when the batter is dead, it will not start up even when the external power is connected? If it is true, why is it so when the external power source is connected?

What could be the cause other than the battery in this case?

Take the battery out and try it.
If it was a PC I'd say it had a PSU problem but laptops aren't really my area...

382673 2005-08-21 08:01:00 Do you have a CD in the drive? Greg (193)
382674 2005-08-21 09:00:00 Do you have a CD in the drive?

Initially, there isn't any CD in the drive. After turning on the power, I could hear the CD drive spinning (or just some noise) and depressed the button to open the CD drive and inserted the XP CD in hoping this will boot up but nothing happens; and I'm quite sure that the CD is not spinning at all.

Tried removing the battery and re inserted it but still no go.

I've heard or read (somewhere) that when the battery is dead, you won't be able to wake up the machine other than replacing the battery. And, I understand that the battery unit is very expensive - around 2 - 3 hundred dollars per unit!

Anyone who has come across similar symptoms?

Cheers

382676 2005-08-21 22:31:00 Just received a phone call from a friend saying that he had a Toshiba notebook 2 years ago with a "dead" battery and he couldn't use the notebook untill the battery was replaced .

Would really like to hear from laptop (notebook) owners who has encountered battery problems .

Cheers

382677 2005-08-21 23:02:00 have you tried taking the battery out & then using power - also check your power adapter. i have an older toshiba as well - dead battery, but still goes - i've just had to replace the adpater for a generic one - works ok with & without battery. quarry (252)
382678 2005-08-22 02:55:00 In the last 3 notebooks (Compaq, Toshiba and HP), all would operate happily on the power adapter with no battery installed at all.
If the battery is dead (short circuit) then it should be removed permanently if trying to run it on the adapter, as the adapter may have difficulty servicing the dead short circuit battery while leaving insufficient to run the laptop. If the fault is in the laptop itself though (which this could be by the sound of it) then its irrelevant.
