| 382545 | 2005-08-20 11:48:00 | Does anyone know of a utility, which works outside IE, through which one can make a dial-up internet connection and that will disconnect after a prescribed period of internet inactivity? IE has its "Disconnect after x minutes of inactivity" function which is good but only works if one connects from within IE. I often connect without using IE (for email clients and downloading manual updates etc) because it is quicker that waiting for IE to load then install a home page. Using at least Win 98SE and 95. TIA. |

| 382550 | 2005-08-25 10:52:00 | Reporting back. Have tried Web Time (not exhaustively) but it is designed primarily for keeping an accumulated log of time on the net each month and doesn't appear to do what I want. Have done a search and found a utility called Dialup Monitor which appears to have the particular feature I am seeking - a time limit alert with the option to continue for a further period. It doesn't seem to have an option for measuring the time interval since there last was download/upload activity which was my target. I am still experimenting with this one and will try to remember to report further. Thanks Beama and other respondents. |

| 382551 | 2005-09-04 04:13:00 | Reporting back again. Dialup Monitor is a simpler prog than most of the webtime-monitoring utilities - it has no facility for monitoring umpteen ISPs and calculating your cumulative monthly bill as others do. It works quite well except that, on my installation at least ( and I have downloaded and installed it twice), if I disconnect then try to close Dialup Monitor it freezes (just itself, not the cptr) and requires the 3-finger salute to close. This happens even when the disconnection is performed, while DM is running, by IE or direct access to my ISP. In addition, after the prog has then been closed using C-A-D its icon doesn't disappear from the system tray until it has been touched by the mouse pointer. This is an irritation rather than a problem and I intend contacting skynergy.com about it. Does anyone else use this prog, and if so do you strike the same gremlin? For the benefit of any one else who may wish to give this util a try, the instructions are not the best but fairly easy to work out. One confusing point, though, is that a countdown pop-up message appears 30 seconds before time expiry and disconnection and the instructions say to click on the Continue button to extend the time limit. There is no labelled button - just click anywhere in the countdown box. |
