382394 2005-08-20 03:12:00 But it's not a problem, LM. Go to BootDisk.com (http://www.bootdisk.com). ;) Graham L (2)
382395 2005-08-20 04:43:00 I think it is possible you may have an NTFS problem here, but I'm guessing. The NTFS partition must have been made with an XP CD, and it may be in the wrong place on the hard drive for Win 98.
It may be necessary to use the XP CD to remove all partitions and start with a clean slate, then boot from the Win98 boot disk (which should have the updated FDISK support for large drives) and make a new DOS primary, active, and formatted partition on which to install Win98.

If that goes ok, then XP can be installed.

382398 2005-08-20 05:49:00 An old FDISK won't see an NTFS partition. You need a newer one. Then start with Win98, which will need Fat32.. After thats done you do XP. pctek (84)
382399 2005-08-20 06:01:00 OK, you are getting different opinions, that is normal :)

To test whether the drive is being detected, use the command fdisk /status after booting from the dos boot floppy.

If it doesn't show any drive, then the BIOS is not doing its job of detecting the drive properly for whatever reason. This would need trouble shooting before anything else.

Fdisk should be able to 'see' the drive and the NTFS partition as a non-dos partition.
I still think NTFS should be removed before trying to install Win 98, just so as to remove any uncertainty.

382401 2005-08-21 05:53:00 Some tools will also be able to convert Drive Formats e.g. from NTFS 5.1 to FAT32 to support Earlier versions of windows

Note that FAT32 will disable the ability to set security NTFS permissions and may create some issues because of this.

An example of a program which can convert NTFS to FAT32 is PowerQuest Partition Magic [versions will vary]. Free products may exist also but be harder to locate.

Conversion can be slower than Formatting and my basic calculation thus far would be for each Gigabyte you move it may take 15 Minutes
