382238 2005-08-19 22:47:00 check out the networking FAQ.

you need to have an account of the XP pc with the same username and password as the 98 pc. also turn off firewalls (temporarly and don't go onto the net) and once its working configure firewalls for the network.

382240 2005-08-19 23:38:00 Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I tried for several months to get my computers running the afore mentioned O/S's to talk to each other before giving in and upgrading to XP on the second one.
W98se is notoriously difficult to network (apparently) and if you do manage to get them to talk you can forget about trying to add a wireless component. Because I wasn't able to use encryption with the W98 machine.

As I said at the outset, good luck. I will be interested to hear how you get on.

382241 2005-08-19 23:41:00 you need to have an account of the XP pc with the same username and password as the 98 pc.

Will restart shortly

also turn off firewalls (temporarly and don't go onto the net) and once its working configure firewalls for the network.

And will do that when i have finished online

Thanks

382242 2005-08-20 01:20:00 I've got the same setup and it works well. Have you run the network setup wizard on the XP Pro machine? It produces an executable to run on the Win98 machine. Ferg (2559)
382243 2005-08-20 01:20:00 Problem solved, it was the firewall
Thanks tweak'e
