382579 2005-08-20 22:28:00 Hi everyone

New to the forum (but have checked in once in a while over the past few years). Am thinking of getting a gaming system, but approx 50% of its use will be for work. This system caught my eye (i live in Dunedin): www.prosouth.co.nz

Questions:

1) i've ran across stuff on the net which might indicate the AMD64 4000 is better than the 3500...dunno...?
2) How's that video card? I'll be playing Flight Sim 2004 mostly, so it would seem fine at first glance, but better to get something with 256MB? Or double up and get a second video card?
3) wonder if I should just wait it out for dual cores...

Not fussed about the sound as I'll likely get an m-audio sound card at some point next year (I tinker with music production).

Thanks for any input/advice.

382581 2005-08-21 01:34:00 Not bad, but I suggets that if you look a bit further afield you will find similar setups for less.

If you can build the system yourself, you will get it considerably cheaper by shopping around for the component parts.....

By way of example, if you go to pricespy.co.nz and search the monitor they are supplying with that package you will see that the price varies from $331 to $459, and guess what......Pro South are the guys charging $459 :2cents:

One good way of getting prices is just email some specs to as many people as you can and get them to quote, most do some pretty good quotes, remember you don't need to pay for extended warranties etc, as the Consumers Gaurantees Act already covers the goods......

382582 2005-08-21 01:42:00 Change the MSI board to an ASUS.
Up the graphics to the 256mb version.
Forget Raid - its twice the cost for minimal performance gain if any.
The case is up to you but dump the PSU in it - not reliable - get an Enermax.
Chnage the DVD brand to Liteon, Asus, Pioneer or SOny. Not Samsung.
The rest is fine.

382583 2005-08-21 01:53:00 Far too expensive for a system using budget items (MSI) Metla (12)
382584 2005-08-21 04:14:00 Hmmm...that's some good stuff to think about. Much appreciated, folks! :) Guess I've got more research (and checking around) to do... Ta -

But reviews never mention reliability, and in my experience the failure rate is too high for my liking.

382587 2005-08-21 08:25:00 I've got a few friends that have had various samsung hardware fail on them, but I don't personally know anyone who has had a liteon drive fail on them (most my friends have at least 1 liteon drive). Greven (91)
