im looking at laptops at the moment for uni next year, and i have seen quite a few of these dell laptops on tv, what do you think of them?? they look ok to me i guess
im after something witha centrino based cpu, a centrino 1.6Ghz possibly? is this enough for uni work?

what do you think about this (www1.ap.dell.com) one? or this (www1.ap.dell.com)one?

I purchased the Inspiron 6000 with a 1.8Ghz, 1GB DDR ram, 100GB HD, Dual Wireless, XP Pro, upgraded display and a few other bits for $2,800 and it is great. Does suck the battery with everything going but turning stuff off makes it last longer. I am certainly satisfied with it.

383371 2005-08-24 10:43:00 Can only suggest avoid Dell. Their deals look good, but after sales service is abysmal. Asus brand comes highly recommended by several people here. Greg (193)
383372 2005-08-25 07:41:00 can anyone suggest a different laptop? my budget is up to 2k. Prescott (11)
383373 2005-08-25 09:05:00 It might help if you state what capability you require this laptop to have. Example, only for using Office type applications, email and internet? Want to watch some DVD's? Want to play games - low/med/high spec'd games? Video editing? Do you see yourself having to carry around this laptop a bit, therefore a light weight unit is preferable? Is it going to be run on battery for long periods?

This will assist people in recommending a suitable laptop. :)

good point :p

yeah a light weight laptop would be good, im going to use it for uni work so im not sure what i will be expecting (maybe office type apps i guess) so i would want a laptop that will last me for a few years, battery time is important to me, so i have set my eyes on something centrino based. might watch dvd's, but wont be editing videos, and i dont think i will be playing any of the latest games.

i would like a good quality and bang for buck laptop that will be within my budget on 2k max.

383375 2005-08-25 10:03:00 I'd go Asus or Acer
Have a couple of friends with Acers, nor probs so far.
Acer also have service centres in Auckland, Wellington & ChCh

I'd also wait till Jan/early Feb before buying it it's for Uni as prices will have fallen and specs will be higher in 6mths time.
Especially after the Xmas binge

383376 2005-08-25 10:08:00 ok, excellent, got any specific models numbers i should look at?

what are the HP laptops like?
Prescott (11)
383377 2005-08-25 10:21:00 No I don't have any specific model numbers as the 3 Acers my friends have are all a couple of years old and will no doubt be superceded by now, but they have all been very reliable.
I've repaired and upgraded several Dells, HP's and Compaqs and have always found them a bit slow even with all the Eye Candy, XP services and Name Brand crap turned off.
A lot of Lappys I've seen lately seem to be pretty slimmed down in terms of hardware features.
For instance:
No Floppy, No PS2 Mouse or external Keybd ports, no parallel for older printers.
Makes a unit that is designed to be taken anywhere and connected anywhere a bit of a pain the neck sometimes.
Although those hardware features are probably fast becomimg 'Old Hat' I'd certainly want them on a Lappy I bought, purely for maximim compatibility.
