383180 2005-08-23 11:26:00 Download and install Spybot Search&Destroy 1.4. Update both Spybot and Adaware, and run them in safe mode.
Between AdAware and Spybot, your problem should be fixed.

383182 2005-08-23 11:35:00 What version of IE are you using and what OS? If it is XP do you have SP2 installed?

You can stop popups with third party programs, or change your browser to one that has a popup blocker built into it, such as Firefox or Opera.

Spybot is now up to ver 1.4, so it would pay to upgrade your program.

How can I get rid of it permanently?Cookies are a normal part of browsing the internet, most of the time they are harmless. You can get a program such as CCleaner which will clear out your internet browsing files after you finish each session.

383184 2005-08-23 11:40:00 Computer was 'home built' by someone, OS is XP Pro, but never been sure whether it is legitimate or not...never been updated, dont have SP2, been too scared to try it. Using IE 6..hell dunno really. Not really into computers, just need the Internet now and then. magoo (8731)
383185 2005-08-23 11:45:00 Well I would suggest you check to see if your OS is legal or not, and if it isn't buy the CD. You can check your legal status of your OS on the Microsoft website. You are running a big risk using an OS which has not been patched from the updates from Microsoft and you will get problems.

I suggest you also read the threads on this forum and learn how to look after your computer. Make sure you are using antivirus and a firewall. Be a responsible owner. :)

383186 2005-08-23 11:52:00 Have been using the corporate edition of Norton antivirus, and up till last week, Zonealarm pro. Now using the XP Pro Firewall.

The people who built this computer told me the US version of Xp was installed. Dont really know the significance of that but they assured me it was registered.

You could block that particular cookie if you liked. It can't be that bad though, I get that cookie when I visit this site.

As for the porn result when searching, you can't really stop that. Turning search engine to a moderate safesearch mode or similar could help though.

The imrworldwide cookie is left by a web research company to track your movements throughout the web. The company is Red Sherriff, latterly AC Neilson. They are employed by sites to determine where visitors have just come from and where they are going etc. Such sites include Trademe, NZHerald and PCWorld. They seem to be harmless, so just set your browser to delete all cookies at browser exit, or to accept only session cookies from the domain in the url, or both. These functions may not be present in IE.

A more permanent solution is to use the hosts file.
