2005-08-23 09:11:00 | After a long and dedicated partnership with Intel I have decided to take the plunge into 64bit computing. Currently I'm just investigating some possible motherboards and CPU's... I have an AGP graphics card so the new motherboard will obviously have to be AGP8x. My motherboard choice is the Gigabyte K8NS-Ultra (www.gigabyte.com.tw) $196.00 I was wanting an Asus board but I can't seem to find a Socket939 board with AGP, so it looks like I may have to stick with the Gigabyte board, unless someone can recommend a good quality board. I am not sure on the CPU as I am new to AMD CPU's, I do want one that has some decent over-clocking capabilities... so I was thinking maybe an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ CPU ($226.00) Any comments and suggestions would be appreciated. cheers chiefnz

2005-08-23 10:06:00 | I got an Asus K8N and AMD 3000+ a few weeks ago, I think it's probably the 'best bang for your buck' combo, especially if (like me) you've already got a decent AGP graphics card. The only real upside to ditching the lot and buying new PCIe M/B is that the graphics cards are cheaper than the AGP ones. I almost got aMicrostar M/B but reading around a few people have had problems with them, so went for a 'better brand' Asus. I also bought the 'Venice core' AMD as these are supposed to run cooler as well.

Granted that would entail spending even more dosh to get a PCI-e video card...... |

2005-08-23 11:29:00 | I like your choice of a 939 m/b . At the difference in price ,why not a 3200+ cpu . Agreed Looks like AGP is on the way out . I'm not too sure about that just yet . My suggestion is stick with an ASUS board and buy a new graphics card too . I would like to stick with the Asus brand mobo wise . At this stage I do not want to get rid of the AGP card it's NOT AN OPTION . . . I am reluctant to replace a $700 graphics card that is hardly a year old for a PCI-E card . I am a gamer but I am not one to go out and buy every bleeding edge piece of gaming equipment . I do not want to replace the X800XT just yet . . . to be honest there's no need . I think this is viable as I can still get a 939 board and use the existing card . Maybe I'm being too picky but it's just my opinion . The other side of the coin is to buy a faster 478 CPU from Intel, but in all honesty the money would be best spent on a new mobo CPU combo . cheers chiefnz

2005-08-23 23:04:00 | If that was me I would be holding onto that card for the next 10 years.... LOL Met... well I wasn't going to hold onto it that long but definitely for another 6 to 8 months at least... I am not prepared to flog the X800XT off, it just doesn't make any sense, the card runs bloody well. I also want to see what the R520 does from ATi... talk around town is that we may only see the new offerings from ATi in Feb, March next year. Apparently the R520 is being delayed to coincide with the release of the Xbox 360 which is Feb March next year, this is also rumoured to be the release date for DX10. ATi may be working on the R520 so that it has DX10 support out of the box which would give it a huge advantage over nVidia... Alas these are just purely speculative guesses at this stage... Only time will tell. Cheers chiefnz

2005-08-23 23:16:00 | As far as I know the new ATI chipset has been delayed due to low yeilds, You can bet with Nvidia tearing up the market that ATI would come to market if they could . If someone is trying to say otherwise then I would say they are trying to put a marketing spin on a bad situation, Not only that but many gamers will be buying a console on launch rather then a video card . I would conicide a card release with an event like that, all eyes will be on the 360 . Onto DX10, Its my understanding that there is no DX10, Longhorn has changed how graphical effects are implemented, and while I could rattle off my understanding of the issue . . . . chances are I have it wrong . . . . . . lmao . Anyhow, Don't expect a DX10, And if there is a DX10 released for our current platform (XP) I will eat a box of hats* *Box of hat will be very tiny and made of sugar
