383389 2005-08-30 14:20:00 Well the two you have just posted I have had dealings with in the last week. If I had to pick one for me I would go for the ASUS, as it has way more ports than the ACER.

The ASUS also has a bigger harddrive, TV out, XP Pro, Nero. And the camera/mic on the top of the screen is a great idea if needed.

The ACER came with a wireless mouse which was cool.

But I must say from what your needs are you could be quite happy with either.

383391 2005-09-06 09:06:00 ummm, who has a 14" widescreen laptop? all i am seeing on the new ones are this size, are they too small when you have a few windows open?? just like a few comments on the 14", should i go for it or not, i myself like at least a 15".... Prescott (11)
383392 2005-09-06 10:43:00 14" widescreen?

Everyone I have handled has been 15.4 widescreen, measured diagonlly of course, these aren't as tall as a 4.3 aspect 15" screen but imo a billion times better to use, going back to mine was like a step back......

383393 2005-09-06 10:50:00 yip, shocked me too, and all the new ones are like this, hp's, toshiba's, to name a few.i was disappointed, and these were even on the "high end" laptops, but there are 15.4 widescreen ones available for a tad more, im gonna go for them. Prescott (11)
383394 2005-09-07 02:02:00 Hi Prescott
My Toshiba has a 14.2 screen. I had intended to get a 15" but there were none at the shop when I bought mine. [Not in Toshiba anyway].
Was told that although 15" will obviously be better for viewing, it often came to how heavy you wanted your laptop to be.
The wider the screen, the wider the laptop, therefore heavier.

I only notice how small it is now that my 17inch IBM is sitting beside it.
One thing I noticed is that no matter what size screen you get, its the proportions of the websites, etc., that really decide how much you get on your screen.
Eg. the amount of a site that appears on my laptop screen gives just as much almost as the 17" because everything is increased in size proportionately. Your adverts get bigger, font size looks bigger, etc.
So in my instance, it depends on whether I choose small or large fonts, small or large font type, how much extra i get on the screen.

If you get a slimline skin for your browser and a Windows Theme that is slimline in the taskbar, menu stuff, etc that will help.
My taskbar is on autohide, my browser had the status bar hidden, and have removed icons I won't use. There's lots of tricks.

But being a male, it will be easier  for you to carry a laptop + books around Varsity than I would be able to. Only reason I've got an ordinary PC as well now is because of the gamma. I want to edit pictures, and noticed on the web that laptops are not too good as screen looks different depending on what slant the screen is on.

Anyway, the above is just how I've found it personally. Enjoy the freedom a laptop gives you. It's really great to have! :)
Cheers.

383398 2005-09-11 01:01:00 thanks for all the suggestions and tips. ive got my laptop now and i am very happy with it. i went for the toshiba m50 with a free upgrade of ram so it brings it up to 1gb. i decided to go for this as a i relised that that other one was just a bit too much for me. computers loose there value so quick and i also took in account on what im going to use this for, im not going to be gaming alot or vid editing alot (although i did specificly get a laptop with a graphics chip to play the odd few games, hush hush), i will just be using it for all sort of thigs.

anyway.. thanks for all the help, im gonna be setting it up the way i like it, ie install a few of my programs etc.

thanks
