383673 2005-08-25 11:50:00 I have a new toy I am thinking of pluging up to the web........

this is and interactive toy, it will only work nicely with one user at a time.

using unix and apache.

any thoughts as to how i can make a system so anyone can use the toy for say.... five minutes and then gets kicked untill the next day??

383674 2005-08-25 12:04:00 whats the toy? lol. it most definitely is possible what you want to do, but depending on what the toy does... sal (67)
383675 2005-08-25 12:10:00 I dont want to give away too much till its ready....

think of a web cam where you can controll the pan/tilt/zoom Etc......

383676 2005-08-25 14:50:00 An idea, but at this time of the day I may be dreaming.

Grab their IP, then dissallow it in the directory after 5-10 minutes. php/asp

383677 2005-08-25 23:40:00 that wont be as good as i need, if they have a NAT router then there could be 10 users all comming in with the same IP...

I have been thinking of using cookies somehow.....

383678 2005-08-26 02:54:00 So someone behind an NAT can pretend to be 10 or 20 peoopkle and hog it for an hour or two. Why not keep it simple and work by the rule "one IP address gets 5 minutes max per day". That way you don't waste time sending and checking cookies. Just have an access "deny" list which is cleared at midnight and gets each user's IP address added to it when they stop using, or are popped off by the timer.

Make it simple, and it will work. Make the administration too complicated in trying to make it perfectly "fair" and you might never get time to get the application working perfectly. ;)

383679 2005-08-26 05:23:00 i think its the one person at a time rather then the kick then off for the rest of the day that is more the problem.

if two users both try any use the system at the same time then it will give wrong results to one or the other person and the will suck.

it would be best if you went to the sote and got a message saying "cool toy is in use.... would you like to watch"
they can either watch what the other person is doing ro come back later and hope it is free.

the question is how best to do this.

383680 2005-08-26 07:15:00 On the Mount Beach webcam at www.citynews.co.nz you can control the cam tilt, direction and zoom for 1 minute if someone else is waiting to control it. If you are waiting for control, you just see what the person controlling it wants to see. It seems if no one else is waiting, then you keep control of the cam for some minutes, not sure if there is a maximum time limit. No idea how they set it up though. But I just went to check it now, and the site isn't working :annoyed: Andrew B (867)
383681 2005-08-27 02:36:00 I assumed that exclusive access to the control would be sorted out first. ;) That's essential, obviously.

The Mount "City Cam", which does work (after a 14 second delay!) has a note: "be aware that this is a shared controlled console". The Mount Beach" camera appears to be still under water... Maybe the 1 minute timeout software broke. ;)
