383593 2005-08-25 02:40:00 I’m about to do a clean install XP Pro onto a new 80GB HDD. From another posting I picked up this site www.blackviper.com and made myself familiar about installing Pro.

Right now I have a 40GB running 98SE and all is working fine. Once I install XP on the new drive I’d like to keep running my original drive until I’ve transferred everything to the new drive and get all running. Once I’ve done this I’ll format the old drive and use it as a spare.
I realise that I’ll probably need to re install some of the software from their install disks etc once transferring the various programme files, that’s OK.

My query is,
1. Will XP set itself to the default drive C:\ or can I nominate the drive letter.
2. Once re booting will the original drive assign its self a new drive i.e. from C:\ to E:\ or something else and will I have an option on which drive to select.
3. Should I select the new drive as the primary or secondary drive?
4. What Bios settings should I keep an eye out for?

Any suggestions that may help me through this would be appreciated.

383594 2005-08-25 03:12:00 This is what I would do in your situation...

1 - disconnect the current 40GB harddrive from your machine
2 - connect the 80GB drive, and install Windows XP. The 80GB drive should be set as master on the Primary IDE connection. This will also set it as the active drive (C:)
3 - once XP is installed, reconnect the 40GB drive as either master on the Secondary IDE connection; or as slave on the Primary IDE connection.
4 - transfer whatever you want from the 40GB drive to the 80GB drive.
5 - once you are satisfied you have all that you wish to keep, wipe the 40GB drive

383595 2005-08-28 01:54:00 Hi Tazz, thanks, looks like its worked OK.
I've read somewhere in one of the PC World Mags regarding getting rid of start up programmes that have set them self up in the system tray.
I believe that we should not use Msconfig > Startup but I can’t find the dam thing that tells me the correct way to stop things loading on startup.
Can you help out?
Mac.

383596 2005-08-28 02:01:00 Hi Mac. Some time ago I bought a new 80 and did what you have done. However, I made the old 40 a slave on the Primary IDE connection as E Drive and regularly Ghost my C Drive to it as a backup. Viper has a page which will answer your query about the msconfig matter.
Edit: Here's the page.. (www.blackviper.com) He suggests running services.msc in the Run box instead!
