383582 2005-08-25 00:45:00 I've got an IBM Thinkpad A21e, running Win98SE. It is getting a bit long in the tooth, but up till now it has worked OK and done what I needed it to do. However it looks like the CDROM drive has gone bung. Windows Device Manager thinks it is there and says "this device is working properly" (yeah right!) but when I try to access it I get a "Device not ready" message - and before anyone asks, I do have a CD in the drive.:D It happens whatever CD I put in.

Anyone got any ideas as to what I can do next? It is a removable drive, but I suspect the cost of replacing the whole thing these days would be uneconomic.

TIA.

383583 2005-08-25 01:11:00 You could try cleaning the lense on it.
There are CD lense cleaning kits available from DSE etc.

383584 2005-08-25 01:16:00 external cdrw ? usb.... drcspy (146)
383585 2005-08-25 01:47:00 external cdrw ? usb....No, it is one of those things that slides/plugs into a drivebay inside the body of the laptop. Tony (4941)
383586 2005-08-25 01:58:00 There are CD lens cleaning kits available from DSE etc.Are you talking about those CDs with little brushes attached? If so, I have one of those, but I don't think that is going to work. Don't you have to treat the CD as an audio CD and play a particular track? If so, As the CDROM is not responding, I don't see how I can do it. Tony (4941)
383587 2005-08-25 06:02:00 The slimline CD drives for laptops are very expensive (like $800 or more :( ). Have a look at trademe ... there have been some on sale recently. But I suspect the slidein ones are very maker- and model-specific.

Mine is now taped closed with duct tape. ;) I just use a network connection or a USB external CD drive.

383588 2005-08-25 06:16:00 Get a cotton bud, put some spit / saliva on the end and rub the lense with it a few times - Don't push to hard! - then use the other side of the cotton bud to dry lense.
Have done this with CD-ROM drives in the past and it has worked.

Have done this with CD-ROM drives in the past and it has worked.Tried cleaning the lens with isopropyl alcohol - didn't make any difference. I could try spit but I don't think it will be any better. :)

I think IPA is preferable. ;)

383591 2005-08-26 08:05:00 clean it with gin or some vcr or dvd cleaners or camera cleaners etc..
look on trademe.
they prob cost $300+ or such .. new at stores.
there are array of choices aval for the thinkpad from zip, super floppy, to cd to cdrw, dvd, dvdrw to 2nd hdd depending on model. or just leave out if you dont use it much, i have a ultra portable without any drives on the unit thou avail on base unit.

v easy to locate as all thinkpad models are not based on model of latpop but generation. within each generation all models most most share the same model drives. the connection are the same. u can slide out and give to ur buddy who also have a thinkpad model. not so aware of the more newer models but pretty sure ur model is the ultrabay 2000 series. hey i will think about it, i could even list mine on trademe, i have a dvd and a cd drive. :)
