It spawns children who grow up (sort of) and in adult life don't change DNS settings from the Mepis default of "Obtain DNS settings by DHCP" :p | personthingy (1670) | ||
| 383438 | 2005-09-28 11:20:00 | Hmm, I have mine on DHCP to obtain DNS but, I'm sure I've run it with routers IP and cable DNS thrown in there. I only changed when trouble shooting a router, which I took back as a dud (Thanks very much to Quay Computers who gave me two replacement routers then one of a different brand. Two with dud firmware in a row has to be bad luck or a bad batch. Credit to Quay, great service at a reasonable price). Anyway, I might have to give defined DNS a whirl and get back to you (I take it you changed it via the Mepis OS Centre?). What sort of router are you using? Not that it should make much diff, although I have noticed some have, what I call, strange interfaces and terminology, from what I'm used to with ADSL. Mind, most things computer are strange to me. |

I selected static DNS, and entered paradises servers: 203.96.152.4 and 203.96.152.12 "Use DHCP for DNS" just wasn't the right thing to do, allthough why it only seemed to slow international web traffic i don't know! Router? I have flaptop connected directly to a cable modem. |

| 383440 | 2005-09-28 21:39:00 | Does anyone on Cable with Paradise have trouble downloading from Microsoft? I can use windows update, and browse pretty much anywhere, however I can't download software from MS. I download the Genuine Advantage active x control and sucessfully validate my windows install. It brings up a page saying thank you for validating etc then spawns another window which after a long period times out. Clicking the link to manually initiate the download results in the same timeout. Anyone else seeing these symptoms? I have a feeling that MS are not using akamai anymore based on a quick netstat -A while waiting for the page to time out..... | BIFF (1) | ||
| 383441 | 2005-10-04 06:05:00 | Chris, I had a little tinker with DNS in Mepis OS Centre and guess what  nah! just kidding, couldn't get it to work on anything except DHCP either. I'll have a play with the Miscellaneous tab, as that's where I think the problem is. BTW, I'm using Mepis ver 3.3.2, although the distro has fair bit of pure Deb in it as well. Biff, I haven't had cause to use the Windows update much since getting cable, because I use Win2k which is now well into it's support wind down. I tended to only use the Win Update page to find what the latest patches were and update them via the patch/KB history page. You might want to try that, can't give a link at the mo because I haven't bookmarked it in Linux but, I'll check it out when I'm in Windows and give the Win Update page a whirl as well. |
