384318 2005-08-28 13:58:00 I was able to use ASR whenever neccessary when the C: drive was a IDE one with a backup IDE drive. I installed a Seagate ST380013AS 80GB SATA drive set in the BIOS as non-raid IDE. I now have windows installed on it but initially had a lot of trouble trying to get windows to make it a C: drive. It insisted on been the D: drive, even though I had it first in boot priority before the other IDE Seagate 40GB drive, on IDE channel 0. One possible reason is that the BIOS can only list the SATA drive as channel 2. The only way I got around this was to disconnect the channel 0 IDE drive to force the SATA to be C; drive, then reconnect IDE drive when windows was installed. I have had quite a few problems like once when my computer was swithed on and I lifted it about 10cm onto an under desk shelf, it must have caused an intermittent supply disconnection to something which then caused the drive SATA to change in priority to boot after the IDE drive. Even though there was no operating system, just a NTFS formatted partition on the IDE drive, the BIOS or something did not allow to try out the SATA drive. I had to go into the BIOS and change back. I have another problem as well. When I try to make shaw that the system files are all in place using the command: sfc //scannow, it informs me that it cannot read from the CD install disk. All other CDś work properly. My main problem is after I have backed up to the IDE drive and made the ASR floppy, when I test ASR booting from the SP2 install CD, it asks press F2 for ASR, then I insert the floppy and after a bit a message comes up that the disk or patition I am recovering to is not the same (of course not true) and it cannot proceed.
Any help would really be apreciated.

How can you use an sATA drive as an IDE drive from the BIOS????
Sounds like your motherboard doesn't fully support sATA. In which case why did you bother getting an sATA drive?
If you really wanted sATA then I'd have upgraded the board too.

In BIOS setup under Peripherals:
SATA Mode, the chice is RAID or IDE.

I chose IDE because I have not got 2 or more SATA drives to setup for RAID.
iMy motherboard is a Albatron KX600S with a VIA 8237 south bridge. According to manual RAID can be setup either 0, 1, or JBOD.

384323 2005-08-29 05:58:00 Even thjough I have it setup as IDE. I have installed a RAID driver. It was installed from a floppy disk as I booted from the windows install CD. Here are the instructions on the Motherboard drivers CD:
* Copy all files and directories of DriverDisk\SATA folder to a floppy disk. Make sure
following directories and files are copied into floppy disk.

A:\
\2003IA32
VIAsraid.inf
VIAsraid.sys
VIAsraid.cat
\Win2000
VIAsraid.inf
VIAsraid.sys
VIAsraid.cat
\Winnt40
VIAsraid.inf
VIAsraid.sys
\WinXP
VIAsraid.inf
VIAsraid.sys
VIAsraid.cat
Txtsetup.oem
VT8237

* Boot system from OS installing CD-ROM.

* Make sure VT6420 BIOS is executed by the system BIOS when POST.

* Press "F6" when OS installer starts running.

* Insert floppy disk.

* Choose the OS device driver wanted for loading.

* Install OS.

* Run setup.exe after OS is installed.

I dis this but I am not certain about running setup after the operating system is installed. I dont no why this would be neccessary if I supplied the drivers on floppy in the first place. Anyway I think I did run setup. This is a week or two ago now. I might not be remembering exactly. I think I tried to update the driver from system and it searched on the internet automatically and told me the driver was already the latest available. Anyway I think I did setup from the CD.
This is what it says in system:
This device is working properly.
There is no exclaimation or red mark in front of it in system/devices

384325 2005-08-29 12:43:00 If you're not using RAID, you shouldnt need SATA drivers when installing XP .

I use 1 SATA 120 GBhere with a 80 GB IDE .

I just chucked the XP cd in booted from it, and it went to the setup screen, let me partition / format it, and that was that .

Are there any entries in the BIOS saying Third master / fourth master etc??

This is whats usually in the BIOS for SATA hdd's .

Also, is there an option for enchanced mode support / S-ATA mode, P-ATA+S-ATA, and P-ATA mode?

I am just looking in the BIOS manual and there is a setup in the BIOS that lists:
Serial Channel0 Master
Serial Channel1 Master
with the drive names, array name, mode and size
this window would only come up just after POST beep, if I had SATA Mode under Peripherals set to RAID but I have it set to IDE . Can it be setup for RAID Mode if it is only one SATA drive and not reallly RAID?

I cannot see anything that mentions these .

There are no entries in setup for enhanced mode support/SATA mode, PATA+SATA, and PATA mode .
