2005-08-27 23:17:00 | My Network. Its a simple layout. Just my desktop (Win XP prof) and my laptop (Win XP Home). But it has been very troublesome. The desktop is the HOST. I can access the network fine from the HOST but when I go to my laptop then it cannot see any sign of my desktop. I have tried umpteen times to install the thing - it all seems to go OK. But using the laptop to try to access the desktop is useless. There is no sign of the HOSTcomputer. I have a suspicion that the cable may be faulty (or me!). Any ideas folks ? Tom

2005-08-27 23:31:00 | 1 . I take it you're using ethernet? If so, do you have a hub, or a crossover cable? 2 . Do both workgroups have the same name? 3 . Have u configured the ips on both? 4 . Have you shared a folder on both? 5 . Is file/printer sharing enabled on both? Any firewalls on either of them? If u want the laptop to get on the net, is ICS enabled on the host? Is use simple file sharing enabled on both? My computer / tools / folder options / view?

2005-08-28 04:35:00 | Thank you Speedy G. I went through your list. It was the firewall. I had turned the Windows firewall on - daft. Once I removed it there was no problem. The older we get the more knowledable we get and unfortunately the more forgetful. Tom

2005-08-28 04:46:00 | Are there any other firewalls on either PC, besides the Windows one? If its the only one you have, and both PC's are on the net, I wouldnt turn it off completely.

2005-08-29 03:17:00 | I am reasonably protected still. I have Ad Aware, AVG, Spybot, Crap Cleaner, Ewido Security, all run occasionally. I also have ZoneAlarm for a firewall but I found I had too many interuptions so only use it occasionally. My laptop I bought with the intention of NEVER EVER having it on the internet and just using it as a sort of portable backup and extension of my desktop. Writers of software seem to think people like me don't exist and I must admit I get a bit brassed off with the continual reminders to update on the internet etc so it does go on very rarely indeed - then I spend some time checking it out. I think I am being fairly sensible but remembering the mistakes over the last 60 years or so probably I must listen to advice. I welcome your comments. Tom
