383903 2005-08-26 17:21:00 Hi

Casually using the computer, it popups telling me I have low disk space on my C:. The drive is 14.6GB regarding capacity, and it appears I have less than 200mb of free space left. I run DiskCleanup, and it tells me it can clear up 33,000KB of space, nothing substational at all, but I run it anyway. It said it was going to delete temporary files, compress old files, etc.

After it has finished, I notice all my icons and quicklaunch icons have been deleted, which annoyed me. So I check to see how much space I have to manually clear up now, but it tells me that the drive has 13 GB of free space ! I know something is wrong here, so I check C:\Program Files\ and see that nearly all the folders are empty. I then check C:\Windows and see its a lot tidier than before.. Inside SYSTEM32 I go, to see the huge gaps where files used to be.

I try internet explorer, nothing.
I try getting in to the registry, or task manager, nothing.
I then try to install the missing components from the WINDOWS XP CD. It tells me that sysocmgr.exe has 'failed to initialize properly (0xc0150002. Click on OK to terminate the application.'
Cannot get on to 'Help and Support' to run system restore. Or is there another way?
I assume that if I try to restart the machine, it may not load up.

Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2
AMD Athlon 3000+
1GB RAM
Norton Internet Security + Giant AntiSpyware (up to date) run a scan each night.

I have access to a computer on the network which is working fine, I have tried copying files from SYSTEM32 to the pretty-much-empty SYSTEM32 (including sysocmgr.exe) - nothing happened.
Now I have just downloaded Service Pack 2, in hope I can 'repair' the missing files. I assume it will not work because SP2 is already installed.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
Josh.

383904 2005-08-26 20:19:00 Ok, well no idea what happened, so the axe came out.

SP2 didn't want to reinstall anything nice; copying files got boring.
I had found systemrestore in C:\windows\system32\restore , but there were no restore points - surprise.

Restarted it, it didnt want to boot up, the recovery disks came out (it wouldnt let me install the recovery console before), and it is now Formatting itself.

Hope this doesn't happen to anyone else.

Now to install eeeeeeeeeeverything again. :horrified

383905 2005-08-26 21:43:00 I don't like auto cleanup programs. Thats one sounds especially bad. Just clean out the PC yourself manually next time. That way you know exactly whats happening. pctek (84)
