384838 2005-08-30 13:23:00 Would some people be able to give me their prefered choices of firewall?
free or full versions.
I'd especially would like to know how much security features they have and if somebody still managed to "hack" their way in somehow the firewall you thought was as secured as fort knox.
cheers,

384839 2005-08-30 14:05:00 The best in my books is ZoneAlarm.
Rated very highly by our host PC World and the best thing about it is its free for personal use.

I ran a port probing test with www.grc.com and zonealarm passed with flying colours.

What more could you ask for. Free antivirus?. Got that to. AVG. Only had 4 viruses come into my computer curtious of Winmx but AVG has stopped them all in there tracks.

With two very good free security related programs out there, theres really no excuse for not having a firewall or antivirus installed on your computer and yet i went to visit some friends in auckland and none of them had active or upto date firewall or antivirus. One had Norton antivirus that had expired two years ago and the other two had nothing at all. Plus the were using IE. As you can imagine they were riddled with spyware, adaware, trojans and a few viruses.
They couldnt work out why there computer was running so slow.

384840 2005-08-30 19:47:00 I use zonealarm as well . Its great I have a fixed IP address, being cable, and never had a virus, trogan, or ANYTHING . Whereas a friend also on cable, who uses the XP firewall, has his virus scanner going off about 3 times a day .

I deactivated Nortons and Xp's firewalls and just use Zoenalarm .

384841 2005-08-30 20:10:00 My pick is Outpost Pro Firewall, a little known yet very good firewall.
In my experience, light years ahead of ZoneAlarm or Nortons.

However if you don't like to think about what dll is asking for access to the net, or you don't like popups asking for your input, then forget about it and stick with the easy firewalls (ZoneAlarm etc).

Its not hack-proof, but it is (apparently) harder to beat than others

384843 2005-08-30 21:44:00 Z.A (http://zonealarm.com) Mr Wetzyl (362)
384844 2005-08-30 22:27:00 best.......ZA is certainly the easiest but others such as outpost sygate, kerio, tiny are fine sicurity wise.

just remember there is no such thing as hacker proof firewall tho it certainly makes it a lot harder for them.

384845 2005-08-30 22:44:00 ZA when it's working well
Can cause headaches when it stuffs up though
The latest versions seem quite stable though

384846 2005-08-30 22:54:00 MY god Zone Alarm!, let me guess you guys also run Norton’s antivirus?

Zone Alarm interferes with many P2P and other programs which cannot be configured out, and its system overhead is much higher than many other firewalls. Lets just say a few of the recommendations in some of these magazines make me smile.

If you have never used anything else then I can see why ZA might seem good. The piggiest computers I have ever worked on use ZA and or Norton’s, Connectivity problems are usually fixed by “uninstalling ZA and get something better” statements.

Id recommend "Sonic wall" for a small environment and "Juniper" for large corporate environments.

If your a Home user with XP, then the built in firewall with SP2 is actually not bad (ie built in stealth, won’t reply to pings etc), and won't annoy you every 6 seconds.

384847 2005-08-30 23:42:00 Personally I wouldn't touch a Nortons Product.
Once ZA is configured properly you don't even know it's there let alone annoy you every 6 seconds.
Trouble is with any of these type of products and computer security in general the average user doesn't bother taking the time to learn how they should be configured properly or learn what the programs strengths and weaknesses are.
They download them, install them and expect it "will just work" and wonder why they still have problems down the track.

Which is good for my turnover I suppose.
