384544 2005-08-29 09:56:00 I have installed & used Win98se for some years. Recently I assembled a new box with some used & new components. So time to install WinXP.

The new box has a Seagate 120gb HDD, and so I thought it best to create 3 partitions, like 20 + 50 + 50 approx. I also have an external USB 120gb drive, that I wished to use for backups, & transferring between the WinXP & Win98se PC's.

I have the WinXP setup CD & installing WinXP was a new experience.
There was a lack of information with the CD, but from what I learned one needs to choose either NTFS or Fat32, and that Win98se wont handle NTFS.

And so I partitioned 20+50+50 & chose Fat32 for the 20gb WinXP install.
I had intended for the other 2 partitions to also be Fat32, but later I find that wont format drives larger than 32gb.

What to do? Is there a way to format the 50+50 for use on both XP & 98se?
Or should I give up the idea of using the external HDD on the 98se PC, and confine it to the XP PC formatted NTFS?

Any advice is very welcome.

384545 2005-08-29 10:04:00 You can format bigger than 32gb using FAT32, just not with the Microsoft formatting tools. Something like Partition Magic (or similar partitioning programs) will usually allow you to also format drives, including FAT32 larger than 32gb.

NTFS is the way to go for WinXP, but you are right - you will need FAT32 for Win98 to be able to read it. If you network between the two, and share drives, then file system doesn't come in to it, so the XP machine could be entirely NTFS and Win98 FAT32 and you can read any of them. Just the portability of the drives to Win98 would disappear.

384546 2005-08-29 10:06:00 why do you want win98? if ya got some important info on that drive, just hook it up as a slave and transfer the files later Prescott (11)
384547 2005-08-29 10:11:00 Or... you can partition and format a drive larger than 32GB with FAT32 if you use a Win98 boot disk with the later Fdisk that supports large drives. It is the earlier Fdisk that has a size limit, not format.com. Terry Porritt (14)

384549 2005-08-29 11:28:00 Thankyou Mike, Thats what I thought . And Yes Terry's advice is interesting .

Thanks Prescott, I realise that, but I intended to keep the two pc's with the option to backup/transfer between the two .

Thanks Terry, I have a 98 boot floppy . Are you saying that "Format . com" on a 98 floppy, does NOT have the size limit? So if my 98 boot floppy has format . com will that avoid the size limit of Fat32?

Many thanks to all for your help .

384551 2005-08-29 13:40:00 I was a reluctant convertee from 98 to XP a couple of years ago. I've never looked back... never had a single crash since then. Greg (193)
384552 2005-08-29 21:20:00 Make the external HDD Fat32 using WIn98 Fdisk.
The new XP hdd doesn't matter - NTFS or Fat32 whatever you like. The 98 PC of course has to be Fat32.

One interesing point - a Windows XP PC with its HDD formatted in Fat32 WILL read NTFS drives attached to it.

384553 2005-08-30 01:13:00 Ohh this is what I want to know as well.

I am moving to XP as well and want to know if I can connect my old fat32 drive in as a slave.

Will it be readable in xp?
