| 385402 | 2005-09-02 11:29:00 | Hi guys,I have been told(I think) that the maximum ammount of ram for a 98 machine is 512M.Anything over that makes the PC crash.I have also been told that there is a fix somewhere for this problem.Are either of these things true?,or is it more a problem of the motherboard,not Win98. | 385405 | 2005-09-02 23:02:00 | the work around works fine......i've used it for years. i've known guys who have run 98se with 1gig ram with no problems. what a lot of people forget is a lot of older motherboards don't support more than 512meg and others that do, don't always run well. install nix on it and the same problem exists. |

| 385406 | 2005-09-02 23:25:00 | I've never used the work around, and never had any memory related errors, however emm386 extended memory does not work, but I don't know if that is because of the amount of ram or just my mother board, besides it's a real mode driver. Windows 98 SE 1 Gig ram. |

| 385407 | 2005-09-03 05:04:00 | With 1 gig of RAM for running win98 wouldn't you also need to update the CPU as well? I mean wouldn't that much RAM with a 333mghz processor or even 700 mghz processor mean that you've got this lake of RAM being squirted thru a straw? Wondering. ? |

Wondering. ? i think i get what you mean. the processor dosn't have to match the SIZE of the ram, that more to with speed af the ram. performance wise theres little point having 1 gig as most people would never actually have the ram full. however certain programs can be very memory hungry and those ones will see a performance boost. |

I mean a giant amount of fast hi-quality RAM linked with an old celeron 333 is overdoing the RAM for what the rest of system can usefully deal with though I do take the point about those programs that use lots of RAM. (every time I learn something about computers I am amazed at how much more there is.) :D |

| 385411 | 2005-09-03 06:08:00 | Another advantage in having 512MB of ram or more is that the ram can be fully used for the swap file instead of the slower hard drive. This is done by adding ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 to system.ini, and this makes the Win98 memory management behave like Win95. support.microsoft.com It is a commonly recommended modification, and certainly keeps the swap file on the hard drive to zero size. |
