2005-09-02 01:59:00 | Re NZPCWorld Sept 2005 p92 - response from PCWorld staff to query on regular PC maintenance. I was rather surprised to see no comment about potential interference to Defrag and particularly ScanDisk [chkdsk] by other programmes which may be running in the background such as Antivirus, Screensaver, Power Management &c. Normally these need to be isolated before the maintenance programmes are run, which may well cause problems with running them under Scheduled Tasks. Your comment would be appreciated. Roy Northey

2005-09-02 02:20:00 | I agree, which is why I never use Task Scheduler but run the maintenance myself in Safe Mode. Something I learnt early on mostly from infor rec'd here at Pressf1. :) | mark c (247) | |
2005-09-02 02:32:00 | Yep, you are correct. I would reccommend Nortons Speed Disk Doctor over Windows built in Defrag and scandisk. I have seen Windows XP defrag leave high fragmentation of 20% or more after a successful defrag for some odd reason, which I still don't know the answer to. Nortons speeddisk will reduce this to 1-2% always, which is what you would expect. BTW I hate Nortons Antivirus and Security centre because of there performance hits on PC's but these other apps are great, just incase you think I might be a Nortons fanboy.

2005-09-02 07:33:00 | Well I'd agree with that requarding norton antivirus as it's worse than no antivirus because it gives you the false impression that you're being protected from viruses. | apparition (3207) | |
2005-09-02 15:56:00 | Agree with running defrag in safe mode, i have faced problems with the defragmenter hanging a little while into defrag. Also as it was too much of a bother to run it manually, i shifted to a third party tool which works just fine. I have set it to defrag once a week, it doesnt take a long time either. | otter (8288) | |
2005-09-02 17:35:00 | Agree with running defrag in safe modeI found that was the only way to do it in W98. But strangely I've never had a problem running it in normal mode with XP (Pro SP1). (Maybe coz XP is just the world's best OS that ever was or ever will be? :D )

2005-09-03 02:18:00 | Sorry could not respond earlier Thanks to all who have. It seems generally accepted that Defrag/Scandisk [also Norton equivalents] do not readily accept interruptions. I have never found it necessary to use SafeMode, provided I have disabled potential interfering problems. From time to time I read of recommendations to use Task Scheduler for Defrag/Scandisk but without warnings. I was intrigued by response from otter i shifted to a third party tool which works just fine Has someone at last written a program able to shut down potential interfering programs before running Defrag/Scandisk ? More information would be appreciated. roygretn
