Of course you're going to get errors! Its part of the kde-base package that gets installed when you:
emerge kde

You just need to set it in /etc/rc.conf and then rc-update add xdm default!

If you specifically want to leave an application out, look up the:
DO_NOT_COMPILE="" emerge kde

385056 2005-09-25 01:02:00 Its all going quite well.
No trouble getting printer to work. Prints with Gimp (yes I've emerged it already), Open Office and kedit.

Sound is problematic. Kernel is set up correctly, sound device recognised, and when I "cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp" I get that horrible buzzing crackly noise. But test sounds won't play in kde.

Any thoughts on this one?

385057 2005-09-25 03:38:00 Have you made sure the volumes are OK? Trying running aumix (or alsamixer) as root and make sure everything looks OK.

What have you got the KDE Control > Sound System > Hardware set on? Have you tried the audio device on different settings? (mine is on autodetect)

Also go CTRL-ESC to bring up the process table for KDE and see if artsd (the KDE sound daemon) is running.

385058 2005-09-25 06:01:00 Open up kcontrol and check what output aRts is using.

I would be inclined to emerge xmms and play around with the arts, esd, oss and alsa outputs to see which one works and what doesnt.

What were your USE flags?

385059 2005-09-25 09:27:00 Hi Chill, Jen & co,

385060 2005-09-25 10:27:00 I've got the sound working ; I'll just have to turn down the volume.
The problem was arts; I had to add it my use flags (take away the minus) then I emerged it and pow! I had sound.
I must've been confused, I thought arts was a bad thing.

385062 2005-09-25 12:09:00 IIRC, aRts was depracted. Either that or it will be in the next major release. Chilling_Silence (9)
385063 2005-09-27 20:24:00 Progress is being made; I have set my digital camera up in DigiKam. As it's not a very common camera (pentax Optio mx4) and not specifically mentioned as being supported, I set it up as a "mass storage device" and that works well :D .

What would be the best way?, can someone please tell me, to change permissions for my cd drives. At present I have to use root to unmount & eject. (umount /dev/hdc & eject /dev/hdc. I've heard there are a few fish hooks could be involved with this.
