2005-09-07 01:30:00 | Thanks for that Tazz. I've actually already done a manual kernel compile, and then used the grub template that Chill gave me & it all looks fine. I can actually log in & do stuff. All I need to do is get m internet connection going & then it's X11 etc... . You're right, a manual compilation is not that scary - interesting even (although in saying that I probably left something out). Thanks Chill, I did emerge coldplug. It'll probably be tonight before I have time to attack that internet connection issue again. I have found the Network Config section, right towards the end of the handbook; so I'll give it another go, later.

2005-09-07 06:57:00 | I still can't get it to work. Of course it would probably help if I understood it. I probably should give up. Why should it work with my previous installation which was wireless internet and not with my present one which is adsl on the phone line. All I did with my last install was emerged rp-pppoe, ran adsl-setup and wham! it worked. Of course I also emerged dhcpcd. Nothing else to do it just worked. (of course this was on my second install). What should I do? Maybe start from scratch. Perhaps Linux is just beyond me

2005-09-07 07:15:00 | For my setup... I use static network IPs (when I was first starting to use FC3 and Samba I found it easier to set up). Also kills the need for dhcp. On my Gentoo install, I made sure the driver for my eth0 connection was a part of the kernel (not a module). The biggest issue I have found with any install of any distro of linux... I have always had to give the O/S the dns ips (/etc/resolv.conf I think is the file). Without dns, I have never been able to get a connection with adsl in linux. (But then I may be doing something wrong which requires dns ips, but it works for me)

2005-09-07 09:42:00 | Tazz, I'm getting desperate for a result now. Would you please be able to give me a guideline as to how your static network config would look in /etc/conf.d/net & also how you pass your dns ip's to /etc/resolv.conf I am totally at a loss here. There seem to be so many choices & I feel it should just work straight off the installation using rp-pppoe and installing dhcpcd (but we've virtually discredited that as an option). I am tempted to try my sons recommendation and go to Debian Sarge, but I have a horrible suspicion that adsl would be dog in that one as well.

2005-09-09 09:30:00 | I installed an old version of Libranet over the top of the Gentoo installation and I was able to configure adsl without too much trouble. But I think I've probably wasted too much time on this for now, so I got rid of linux and grub and my machine is now back to running purely Win XP Pro. Simple and it does the job. Anyway, thanks Chill & Tazz for all your help and all the best for your linux endeavours.

2005-09-13 20:19:00 | Since my last post; I have installed Debian Sarge (Testing) from cd1, which I downloaded. Install went really well and set up my broadband connection really easily (detected & configured my network device and set up dhcp no problem). I'm grappling with apt at present, its not as intuitive as portage. It's all interesting and at least I have a linux installation to experiment with.

2005-09-14 02:30:00 | jcr1: Ive just got my Gentoo LiveCD up and running Its by no means perfect, but it boots and everything but QtParted so far appears to be working. Theres also one error during boot, but its non-critical. Aside from that, would you be keen to give it a whirl at some stage for me and let me know what you think of it compared to having to do a normal Gentoo install?
