385274 2005-09-01 10:22:00 soz i should have mentioned what had already been said.......get the correct drivers for the modem (and check motherboard drivers, vid card drivers etc. if they forgot to install modem drivers they proberly forgot other drivers.) tweak'e (69)
385275 2005-09-01 10:24:00 If you advise the modem model and operating system we can give you the extra setting to use. It is important to use the correct string otherwise your modem will not connect at all. Go to Control panel/Modems and note the name of the modem driver there. Safari (3993)
385276 2005-09-01 10:45:00 OK.............
control panel says: Rockwell HCF56K Datafax Speakerphone modem.........

and Everest says......
.... (If this is usefull)
Rockwell RC56HCFPCI Supramax 56i modem

I have actually had a look for a new driver but couldn't find one. Well not so far..TIA...m

Open "My Computer".
Open "Dial-Up Networking".

Windows ME
Click "Start".
Click "Settings"
Click "Dial-up Networking

Right click on your ISP icon and select properties
Click on Configure at the bottom
Select Max speed to 38400
Click on Connections Tab at the top and Advanced at the bottom
In the Extra Settings box type in +MS=V34
Click ok all the way out.

This will give you a slower connect speed but it will be more stable and downloads should be faster.

385278 2005-09-01 21:46:00 If mark c's other computer is connecting at 49K unless that modem is hopelessly optimistic, the line can't be that rural or noisy.

Sometimes with Rockwell modems even the correct drivers need w2 in the extra settings box to report line speed.

A Celeron 333 should have no trouble supporting an internal modem. I've found that if an internal drops out from CPU problems it doesn't seem to matter how powerful the CPU is. It's possibly a Windows multitasking thing and a bad software app.

leave it at 115. with most internals it won't do anything and if it dos it won't slow the connection speed, it just slows the speed the modem talks to the pc which you want asfast as poissible reguardless of connection speed.

comman as mud. even mine connects at 44k but you can barly download a simple web page and it times out like crazy.

its not suppporting the modem thats the problems. slow pc with 96 meg ram can mean the pc runs slower than what the modem is connecting at and seeing as the modem is basicly run by the pc the modem will simply stop/start all the time. exspecially if doing other things at the same time (multiable browser windows open, chat progs, flash or java apps running in the browser.

385280 2005-09-01 22:52:00 Thanks for all that.

Will have a read tonight when I've got plenty of time to digest it.

Other computer is in town. (I maintain it for a communioty org.)

I keep windows down to one and if downloading a prog / update etc I leave it to do its thing.

I had heard about the biz of reducing the speed and then getting better download times, and thanks for the insructions.

Gotta go now......cheers......m :)

385281 2005-09-02 03:06:00 Thanks for all that . I used the settings Safari suggested and went back to www . radiomods . co . nz/modemtestpage . html and ran the test three times on the average came out much the same .

I think the phone line's the weak link . I know a guy used to be a phone tech I'll ask him to check it out .

Thanks to you all . :D :) . . . and I'll update the driver

385282 2005-09-09 02:22:00 Just FYI .

I've just had Teleom/Downers out here to check the phone and the guy said it was a Network Card in the box down the road and he replaced it and now the phone line is quiet (so quiet that the first time I picked it up I thought it had died) . :waughh:

And I've done some speed tests and have gained on average a kilobyte per second . This is good news .

Thanks for all the info and may all your traffic lights be green . ;)
