1390152 2014-12-13 23:40:00 Hi guys.
I have an Acer Aspire One which only has 1 Gb system ram.
I contact local computer shop and he said not worth the money to update it as was about $130...
I'm running Linux Mint 17 Qiana and is better that it was on Win 7 Starter.
Anyone know of and other Freebee operating system that might speed things up?
I seem to remember something about Google having an operating system.
Any advice appreciated,
Ian

1390153 2014-12-14 01:28:00 The Google OS is called Chrome OS.

A memory upgrade to 2GB is not that expensive, the memory its self is roughly $30-$40 depending on brand. The price quoted I suspect will include labor.

It should run OK on W7 Starter, I got a HP Mini here, 1GB Memory, Atom CPU and runs Windows 7 Pro quite happily. Rans as you would expect, not ever going to be lightning fast, but its a good little toy :)

Yes, was with labour.
Said you had to take back off and then remove the keyboard.

I tried running it for quite a while, but was super slow.
Linux is quite an improvement.
I did try quite a few different Linux, before settling on this one.

1390155 2014-12-14 01:53:00 Computer shop may have a point considering there's one with 2GB already installed on trademe for $100 www.trademe.co.nz and several others at similar prices.
Depends on the model though. I really dislike machines that make the more likely upgrades like RAM difficult. My laptop has an easily removed cover to access the RAM, that's how it should be.

If you wanted to try yourself there are usually good guides to be found on youtube just make sure it's for the right model.
www.youtube.com for example

1390156 2014-12-14 02:17:00 Yep the thing basically needs to be stripped. Unlike larger laptops they dont have a separate cover that unscrews.

This video on youtube basically shows how, there are several videos www.youtube.com

My mistake before - I forgot the Acers have one slot  and the price quoted was for a 1GB, its only standard Laptop memory, nothing special.

Edited: SNAP, same video ;) was watching it lol.
