1390073 2014-12-13 01:30:00 I can see a “let’s start again” coming up on this ASUS Laptop that has been causing me grief so I thought I'd check to see what programme you people use for collecting-saving-reinstalling Drivers.

Equally, which don’t you recommend? :D

:thanks

1390074 2014-12-13 01:53:00 I never use any, just go to the manufacturers webpage and download the current drivers for your model. dugimodo (138)
1390075 2014-12-13 01:59:00 Don't use a 3rd party program, go to the ASUS website here (www.asus.com) and download the correct drivers for your model of lappy & OS. fnphoto (2434)

Before you start the fresh install - save on an external drive or flash drive

1390077 2014-12-13 02:02:00 If its the original install there will be on the C drive ( possibly in a hidden folder) the drivers folder, you can copy that to another place. If its the factory restore being run, no need to get any drivers they will be in the re-install Image.

Using a driver back up program is a last resort (for me anyway) as it could be the drivers causing a problem. As everyone suggests, the ASUS site will have the latest.

"IF" I do have to collect the installed drivers I found DriverMax works good. I ONLY use it for backing up existing drivers not any of its other functions www.innovative-sol.com

1390078 2014-12-13 03:01:00 Yep, I hear what you’re all saying, it’s just that on this occasion I thought it might be wise to back-up the existing drivers just in case I have trouble finding or getting new ones.

I’ve noticed lately a lot of available software doesn’t work on older machines.

Although not drivers, I’ve recently had trouble with the likes of Firefox and VLC Media Player updating on old machines. I had to go and find the old versions to get things going again.

I really don’t think much thought is put into backward compatibility anymore. ;)

PS Not a restore Wainui, there are no disks or partitions. She'll be a format and re-installation.

1390079 2014-12-13 19:38:00 Ok, I thought I’d use “Search” to locate the Driver folder but would you believe I come up with 14 Driver folders.

Now it would seem a lot of drivers don’t reside in the “System32/Drivers” folder and they are used for connecting iPhones, Data T Sticks, Camera’s and other peripherals.

Given that I don’t like my chances of gleaning the required information to track the correct drivers for these peripherals what do you suggest?

1390080 2014-12-13 19:45:00 Driver magician can back up drivers but its not free. Most of the drivers I install, I put them on a separate partition

Altho, with Win7 and 8, I'm using the windows drivers not the ASUS drivers. Only separate drivers on this are the Tplink drivers for the wireless. And the ASUS chipset / updated SATA drivers

The rest are what windows installed

1390081 2014-12-13 21:01:00 Looks like the drivers could be the 4th one down, on the C drive. Open it and see if all the different driver folders are listed.

If not, as mentioned before DriverMax will do it. BUT if you use that, LOOK :stare: When installing, make sure you select the CUSTOM options and untick a couple of "extras" it wants to install.

Let it do the Scan for drivers first, Once done, hit the back arrow at the top, then click Driver Backup and Restore, it will scan and offer the drivers, either select the ones you want, or click backup / All Drivers and it will do the rest, once done copy off the zipped file to a external device.

1390082 2014-12-13 21:45:00 Have you thought of going to the ASUS site first and checking what drivers you will need? You could download them to a folder, back it up on a USB and use it once you have done the reinstall! Bryan (147)
