1390003 2014-12-12 00:20:00 I was doing a mod on my motherboard (LGA 775 to 771) and accidentally bent 3 pins, even sliced a bit off one. I bent them all back into place as best I could and I reassembled the PC. It froze once on the XP boot screen but after that loaded as normal, I'm surprised it'd even boot, I thought my mobo was done. Went on business as usual, copied data to and from external HDDs, emails etc. and it's been fine since yesterday.

Question is will I get any problems further down the road? I'm guessing if I use the CPU to it's full capacity it will utilize all the pins and that's when I might get a problem, is this correct?

1390004 2014-12-12 02:06:00 As long as they are not broken and are still making contact to the right hole then it's fine. The tricky bit is usually straightening them into the correct position without breaking them. More often than not I think what kills them is putting them misaligned into the socket or not noticing the bent pins and trying to insert anyway.

If you have 1 or more pins not making contact then who knows what random faults you'll see, depends what that particular pin does.

I forget are the pins on the CPU or the motherboard for 775?

1390005 2014-12-12 02:20:00 if it works just carry on regardless. If its a system critical PC , then replace it .
Ive bent back plenty of CPU pins , usually either are ok or just fall off (not OK).

1390006 2014-12-12 02:56:00 You may be lucky.

I believe that ALL the pins are not connected on most CPU's.

There are quite a few that are only "Place Holders" so if you're lucky you might strike one of them. ;)

If it works I guess you have.

1390007 2014-12-12 18:03:00 Don't bend them anymore, that's what snaps them.
You can usually find a pin map on the net....it all depends which pins they are and how important. Sounds like you were lucky and it isn't a major pin.

1390008 2014-12-13 05:15:00 Oh I'm definitely not touching it again. I'm just wondering, will I get any problems if I use my CPU to it's full capacity or are all the pins it's currently connected to already in use? I guess I just played Minesweeper with my CPU and cleared a few empty boxes. Vicx (11114)
1390009 2014-12-13 18:37:00 You'll either have a problem straight away, or not.
Sp long as you leave it now, it should be fine.
