Interesting comment --
The timing of the announcement by Sky TV scotches the main basis for speculation it might be negotiating to buy internet provider Orcon though the broadcaster has continued to refuse to comment on that speculation.

1377377 2014-06-18 04:49:00 Depends on what you read. NBR are convinced Sky are not buying Orcon. I saw comment on GZ that you could set up a new ISP for under what Orcon are asking anyway. Alex B (15479)
1377378 2014-06-18 05:29:00 I was thinking along the lines of competition for the likes of Quickflix or Ezyflix.

I notice Ezyflix is pay as you go, so there's no monthly fee, and you can purchase/download if you want. Just had a look at some of the films, Trailers, they play really clear, no lag.

Guess one thing to look into is how far behind the release data will they be available here in NZ

Doesn't Sky have an extensive partnership with Vodafone? So why buy or start an ISP?

Was wondering the same thing. It would piss Vodafone of a bit if Sky got into bed with an ISP like Skycon.

I suspect it would hurt VF more, though. A big chunk of their customers who are on the VF/Sky plan, are there because they get the discounted Sky. If VF were no longer able to offer that, I would suggest most of those people would keep their Sky, but then possibly change ISP as the key reason for their choice is gone.

Places like Telecom cant match the combined plans Telstra/Vodafone have. Xtra cant match the cable speed either even with their UFB. Some of the Speeds people are getting with UFB are still below the cable plans.

Had this discussion before when Telecom or other ISP's try to offer plans, I've run through everything we have and they simply cant match it. As for Sky, we actually have both :) Mysky (through Sky) and HD Sky through Telstra/Vodafone, because the combined plan on Vodafone is less than a different telco/ ISP + sky HD x2 Combined.

Still will be interesting as to what Sky will be offering ( price & Content wise)

If the Sky component of your VF plan is gone, then so is the value benefit of getting cheaper Sky. Telecom will be able to more than match Vodafone's cable speeds when the LFCs complete their 200mbps plans in the near future, not to mention Cable only offers up to 10Mbps upstream, far inferior to UFB. If Voda/Sky split, people who are with VF *because* of the Sky discount will likely consider other ISP options is all I'm saying.

1377384 2014-06-18 12:24:00 I am not sure if the 200Mbps is that relevant maybe. A household wants an approx. speed and a good price combo with Sky. We have a IPTV so no Sky now parents had standard Def Sky for 10yrs at $70/mo but switched over. 30Mbps here only UFB and it is fine for them. 100Mbps should be fine for most users ... Nomad (952)

This year alone VF have increased the speed, ( Speed test is around 125+ Mbps) and gone unlimited in traffic, AND dropped the price /month on the internet, So why should I settle for a lesser service at more cost ? wainuitech (129)
