1377114 2014-06-13 05:48:00 Hi

Who would be the best person to talk to regarding your salary/wage bonus and the income tax calculation?

Every year IRD is telling me to pay more tax and I don't know how to calculate my income tax.
The Gross income on my IRD online is less than stated in my PaySlip?

I also don't have Kiwi Saver which adds a bit more to my income as well as a yearly bonus.

I just don't know how to calculate my tax

Who can I talk to?

An accountant. Although they'd charge you a fortune.
IRD themselves, they are helpful you know.

Income has taken into account ACC, you are matching that to payslips?

I second that. Forget all the negatives you may have heard about the money grubbing b***ards etc. There's always two sides to a story and you'll probably find those who have been hard done by have slipped up (purposely) or tried to put one across them.

My books were in a mess thanks to an accountant whose business ethics were of a questionable standard. The Revenue helped me sort the mess out because I fronted up and just said "help". It was a frankly pleasant experience especially when they reversed some incorrect returns and reduced my tax bill to zero.

You could ring around and find out. If all your accounts are in order then the cost should be pretty reasonable. If you use accounting software like Xero or Myob then it should be pretty straight forward for an accountant to do your taxes. I would suggest that the bill would only be a couple of hundred $$ max. Baring in mind that an accountant probably has to charge their services out at about $85 an hour (or more if they work for an accounting practice)

1377119 2014-06-13 07:17:00 Ha! "IRD helpful"!!! The a brewery billboard if I ever saw one!

I missed (accidentally) a (smallish - would buy a nice new flat screen TV) provisional tax payment for my wife about 18 months ago. I was never notified that I had missed it (would have paid it immediately if I had) and even my accountants knew nothing of it until they forwarded me a statement in February this year - with months of penalty interest accruing!! When my accountant questioned the non-notification, he was told "Oh, we don't send out statements as often as we used to"!!! Needless to say, I have paid the missed payment, but I am disputing the penalties!

They haven't changed their spots - the IRD are still pricks!

1377120 2014-06-13 08:49:00 Yep. IRD is it's own biggest enemy.

Their systems are hopeless. They fail to credit payments, and pretend they never existed, then lump on penalty charges, interest charges, and then steal the balance from one IRD account (PAYE) to pay another IRD account (GST), resulting in multiple accounts beeing all screwed up by their own incompetence and automated theft.

ACC is no better.

They invoice stuff 3 years after the fact, and get the entire year wrong in the info they quote from IRD.

Most of the 'experts' employed by IRD to assess cases are well aware of who pays their wages, and consequently distort reports in the favour of their employers... that earns these corrupt assessors more work and job security, while the honest ones find themselves insecure about their future employment.

The whole system is rotten to the core now, which is a shame, as the public suffer, and the honest employees all get tarred with the same dirty brush of their dishonest peers.

1377121 2014-06-13 21:01:00 IRD, regardless of their tactics with missed payments, are helpful.
You can ring them and ask all sorts of questions about how to, and so on.

As he wants to know about the difference of pay on their site, and what's on the payslip, they will be very helpful about it.

The sad part is, most likely what's on their site is 99% likely to be correct.

I agree with Pctek. As long as you do your part they are helpful in my experience. If however you or your accountant stuff up expect problems. After all it is their mission in life to collect the cash required to run the country.

.Have to agree with that. Sometimes its actually the fault of the staff that a screw-up happens.

Lately I had rung up to make some arrangements, after doing all the right things I was told by the guy it was all done.

Well stuff me  two months later get an overdue notice along with interest WTF !! on the phone again this time I got the lady's name, explained what was meant to be arranged.

She looked up the details and said it was recorded I had rung but that was all. She asked me what the arrangements and amounts were. Since I had them in a spread sheet ( from previous conversation) the figures were exact, and I had kept to my side of the arrangements -- She said its obvious they had screwed up, apologized, wiped any interest and this time a week later got a letter saying it was their mistake and a confirmation of the actual arrangements.

So they can be helpful when given all the facts and dont try to muck them about. I suspect if someone tried to muck them about, jump up and down, yell and scream, they wouldn't be so helpful. At the end of the day they are only human.
