1390321 2014-12-17 23:02:00 Chrome seems to be an easy way of getting crap on your system now.

If you use torrents, I would say you would have a higher chance of getting something. If you have no idea what you're getting / running

And you can get adware on your system with free software. Some people just click next then find something has been installed. And they wonder how / why their system is full of adware etc

And yup keep programs like flash if you use it and java up to date. Main one is common sense. Mac owners THOUGHT they were safe from viruses a few yrs ago. But theyre not now

1390322 2014-12-18 01:46:00 Common sense is great if you are somewhat tech minded but there are a lot of people out there of different ages and different jobs who do use various forms of technology because it is convenient and because it is part of our life, but that doesn't mean that they know, care or understand how technology works and a lot of them wouldn't have any interest in understanding how technology works as their job or life doesn't have any requirement for it.

If your job is 50% PC based, you need to have some skills. You need to be savvy in what you do, so that you dont put your companies network at risk
If someone is a luddite lacking in even basic skills, expect issues. It happens, more than you would imagine.

Common sense. Its needed in most modern PC based workplaces.
Sadly Ive had to go onsite to show someone how to plug in a USB stick(thats the level of some employees) , Ive had arguments with clients insisting they open EVERY spam email , try telling a boss not to spend hours on porn sites & then use that PC for internet banking, Ive seen a few accountants let their kids play on work PC after hours : yes play games, download cracks , infect PC's with private/confidential data on it.

Yup, that is the world we live in.
Some people who don't see computing devices as being at the centre of their tiny universe only have the PC skills that are required to do their job.

1390324 2014-12-19 03:05:00 Talking of repeat 'offenders', just got a laptop here again with another huge load of that bloody Mindspark crap. No idea where he gets it from but he has been told to watch like a hawk when he installs anything. What a disease that Mindspark is. Wikipedia says the company has an income of 205 million! How many people choose to contribute to this income, I wonder. linw (53)

That's a fairly average income if that is a US company.

1390326 2014-12-19 19:14:00 That may be so, but to 'earn' that much on the back of all the grief and removal cost they cause is despicable. linw (53)

Read that first sentence and was thinking, really? They do?

But, ah, the second bit - yep, and worse, argue with you (sometimes) when you point these things out to them.

I had a bit of a dispute with a lady, who wanted some tuition, the other day. She insisted Mavis's boy had put Windows 10 on her laptop - over a year ago now, also she wanted to learn "everything".

1390328 2014-12-22 00:54:00 2. Any OS can get Malware or Viruses, there are just more written for windows because it's the most popular OS
And having never been designed with security as a big concern, it's a piece of cake to infect...
