1390010 2014-12-12 02:49:00 I’ve got an elderly ASUS laptop here that is driving me mad.

Among many problems I can’t hook onto the Internet using my WiFi. I’ve reinstalled Firefox but no go. Even IE won’t work.

The computer says it’s working with the Modem fine but do you think I can open a webpage, not in your life, all I get is Server not found.

The connection between the Computer and Modem shows connected with strength excellent. Can also see all the Neighbours WiFi but can’t open a page using Google Search or by typing in the correct address.

What have I forgotten to do?

:thanks

1390011 2014-12-12 02:57:00 If you put in the modem's IP address into firefox do you get the config page for it? CYaBro (73)
1390012 2014-12-12 03:30:00 Yep, put in http:\\192.168.1.1 and get a box reading Authentication Required a User Name and Password are being requested...........................

However, enter user name and password and it flicks and get 401 Unauthorised message.

1390013 2014-12-12 09:14:00 Take you are using ädmin for both username and password? Lawrence (2987)
1390014 2014-12-12 18:27:00 Does it work if you get a network cable and plug in directly to the router/modem? CYaBro (73)
1390015 2014-12-12 18:57:00 Take you are using ädmin for both username and password?

Dahhhhh, no, was using normal name and password so now I can see all about the modem and it tells me I am connected and can now browse the Internet.

However, that is not the case. :crying

Running Network Diagnostics for Windows XP – Windows Internet Explorer I get:

"HTTP: Error 12007 Connecting to www.microsoft.com The Server name or address could not be resolved."

I just don’t seem to get through the Modem whilst three other computers in the house plus visitors don’t have a problem.

1390016 2014-12-12 19:16:00 Get into the command prompt and type ipconfig /all

What is your IPV4 address, Gateway addr and DNS address?

ping 130.123.128.201

Do you get 4 successful pings?

1390017 2014-12-12 19:28:00 Probably pay to check your network settings on the laptop(if not used for a while) against your main work horse

This explains it clearly csg.trinhall.cam.ac.uk , take note here (Obtain an IP address automatically) may not be ticked

1390018 2014-12-12 19:50:00 See if windowsupdate works. If it doesnt tell us what error comes up. And what firewall is on it (if its not windows firewall)? Speedy Gonzales (78)

FIXED :clap Thank you all and a special thanks to Lawrence for the link that nailed the problem.

For those interested, the problem was, whilst I had checked that Internet Protocol was ticked I hadn’t clicked on it and then clicked Properties. Had I, I would have noticed that Obtain an IP address automatically was selected, but, Obtain DNS server address was not. Use the following DNS server address was however. Unfortunately, in my haste I didn’t record what that Preferred and Alternate address was or I could have checked.

Anyway, that’s another hurdle jumped, now for further problems but being able to get on the Internet will be a big help.

:thanks again everyone.
