| 1377404 | 2014-06-18 10:01:00 | Hi all. Over the years I have noticed that Free Access items, sites, programmes are getting less & less. Initially, for me, it was Genealogy sites. If is possible to maek a $ out of something or somebody, then so be it. Even Govt & Local Govt depts are at it. I look back on a long life & deplore the way things are going. Always money (as Pink Floyd would sing). Ah well I dont have many more years to worry about it but I feel sorry for younger people. PJ |

| 1377405 | 2014-06-18 10:12:00 | Errrr Its called making a living / Business . To many people think everything should be for free . BUT they complain like hell if they dont get paid, or their pay is short for some reason . Take this example ---- a person goes to work, works for 40 hours, then gets told --- We are giving your work away for free, so since we dont make any money from YOUR work YOU wont be paid -- Bet that would go down really well . :tui: Somewhere along the line people who give stuff away still generally get paid by one way or another - Hence a LOT of free programs that include paid "offerings" often hidden within the "FREE" Program - Someone has to pay for that Free software, somehow . |

Correct, free stuff comes at a price . Even St John's ambulance and surf life saving equipment has to be donated from a charitable trust which needs to receive cash donations in order to operate . Software is much the same - you can give it away for free but you still need to get money back for it some how in order to pay for your own cost of living - developers do this either by contracting their services out to companies (Linux developers) or by incorporating adverts into apps or by encouraging in app purchases in free apps . |

PJ PJ you are quite correct, Genealogy is a good example, The Latter Day Saints free FamilySearch software updates have been discontinued and they recommend a pay site, in lieu of their PAF5 . 2 existing program . How many of us assisted them with testing their software, for free . Also did a lot of Census input for a Wiltshire site, but they are still available to search for free . In NZ you can view the Government BMD and get a lot of details without having to purchase the relevant certificate . For Old Blighty you have to purchase the certificates to get all the details . You must also realise young people are not interested in the things us oldies' are into . Lurking . |

| 1377408 | 2014-06-19 06:25:00 | Wai & Web...You are both right of course. Having said that, for the 5 years I worked as a Self Employed electrician. I did do some Pro Bono work where I thought it worthwhile. No I did not go broke. I did well financially. I did not adverise, all my work was word of mouth. Mostly Industrial. I gave it up because 24/7 was killing me.PJ | Poppa John (284) | ||

Probably like me and the rule of 80/20% paid employment to viz "voluntary", tax returns, profit and loss audits, cash books, etc. Then there is the volunteering, Seven Sharp girl gets quotes by Mike, but others do it without the glory, e.g. moi, but we won't go there. You do realise that ambulances aren't free, right? If you take a ride in one, you have to pay for it - you literally get a bill in the mail. |
