There are plenty of far more interesting races around, using normal boats, involving a race to get somewhere and not sailing around in circles, and not involving billions to enter: The Sydney to Hobart for instance, far more entertaining: Entry fee A$585 PLUS the following fee per crew member A$55 Additional handicap category entry fee - for each additional category A$110 Cheap as dirt....	pctek (84)

"My sense actually is the public is waning on the idea a bit," he told Newstalk ZB this morning . "I think there's a few people saying 'we don't like the fact that this is a sport where the winner sets the rules' . " He reiterated to Newstalk ZB that the government won't fund the next bid for the America's Cup . "This can't be a government-led thing," he said . Mr Key said Team NZ needs to find private sector sponsors and donors to fund the campaign . He said there were "benefits" for the country in the campaign going ahead . :thumbs: Someone passed the comment over the weekend the net worth of many of the individual crew members is well into the millions and their earnings likewise . 1377191	2014-06-16 01:29:00	I don’t believe the gall of Dalton wanting the Taxpayer to stump up and make them the country’s highest paid beneficiaries, especially after having completely blown it last time. If they want to play in a Millionaires playground they can use their own money and paddle their own Waka. Problem solved. :D	B.M. (505)

As much as I am a huge fan of the America's Cup and all of the financial and marine industry/tourism spinoffs that it produces for this country - and there were a lot of them last time we hosted the cup, I would have to say that given the struggle that many teams had with getting funding support for the recent cup in San Francisco (3 actually made it to the start line although only two did any "proper" racing) compared with how many teams turned up for the cup in Auckland (11 made it to the start line), I would say that it will be interesting to see how many teams actually manage to trump up with the cash. Having the cup protocol in your favour is great, tilting the playing field so that no one else can afford to compete.. pointless.	Webdevguy (17166)

That was a turning point for me. That Dalton made what appeared to be a thinly veiled threat to hold the nation to ransom and arrogantly assume he would enjoy continued public support is backfiring on him. Let the members of Team NZ - and some of their support hangers on - use their liquid assets or mortgage some of their personal real estate investments to support themselves. Let Team NZ put up a sound business proposition that sponsors can see they're not pouring good money after bad. Even an angel investor will need something more than a pathetic plea to meet a self-imposed end of the month deadline. And our government should not be in the angel investor business.	WalOne (4202)
