385970 2005-09-04 10:28:00 Hello members

I have bought a biger HDD and have formated(100GB) and installed W2K. During the installation it was obvious the the HDD was not totaly visible(only ~130GB).
After W2K was installed I wanted to partition the rest-and there is only 30Gb unpartitioned space.
Can anyone help me ragarding formating, also to configure the computer so I could use the 200GB.
New HDD is a Seagate Bracuda 200 GB.

385971 2005-09-04 10:33:00 It might need a BIOS update.

You have to find out what the brand/model of the mobo is.

Are any of the service packs installed? ie : SP4?

385972 2005-09-04 10:37:00 use everest home dition to find out the model number, then google it Prescott (11)
385973 2005-09-04 10:43:00 According to this

support.microsoft.com

You also need SP3 or 4 for 2K.

To enable 48-bit LBA

385974 2005-09-04 10:53:00 Thanks guys for the quick response

W2K sp4 installed;
Mobo:
CPU Type Intel Pentium 4, 2400 MHz (18 x 133)
Motherboard Name Albatron PX865P (Pro) / PX865PE (Pro) / PX865PEL-800 / PX865PE Lite (Pro)
Motherboard Chipset Intel Springdale i865PE
System Memory 1536 MB (DDR SDRAM)
BIOS Type Award (03/01/04)

Howdo I enable for 48 bit LBa.
I had a look in the BIOS setup and could not find it?

385975 2005-09-04 11:06:00 On some mobos LBA is under the entry/entries of the Primary / secondary ide entry .

Some systems also show the size of the hdd here . How many GB's does it show on yours Gion?

I would check and see how many gigs the BIOS shows first . .

If it shows the whole 200gb, you may have to edit the registry as shown in my previous post .

385976 2005-09-04 12:34:00 Thanks once more Speedy for you time!
It just took me a bit longer to reply as I had to change HDD.
Also I had to change the cable to master and after that it showed the 200GB in the BIOS.
On top of that I did edit the registry as per your link, and, all is going like a breeze!! So, once more thank you Speedy.
Interesting is also that the 200Gb Hdd has only 180 something usable space?
I guess the rest is for system?

I have formated NTFS for the OS system and wonder would you also do the same for a data partition?

Regards and have a good night

Gion :)

385977 2005-09-04 17:10:00 Even though I run a few 200's in my system, I am used to seeing only 189 gig available on each of them .

Seems a little high too for me, especially as there are no hidden partitions on my system at all . . . and funny that all of mine report the same numbers, even though none of them hold the OPSYS . Hmmmmmmmm :waughh:

4/200g RAID 0+1
4/200g JBOD
1/40g OPSYS

385978 2005-09-04 21:19:00 Good to hear its fixed Gion

Depends how big, you've made the partition/s .

If the partitions are over, like 32-33GB each, its a good idea to format in NTFS .

If you're into video editing like me, it'll have to be formatted in NTFS .

As FAT32 wont deal with files bigger than 4GB .

And a few of my files go over 4GB . NTFS will .

Yup, u dont usually see or get all of the hdd . Some space is used for the system / overhead etc .

385979 2005-09-05 10:57:00 Hard drive manufactures (incorrectly) specify their size using 1000k per meg, whereas the computer (properly) recognizes a megabyte as 1024k. This accounts for the majority of the 180 gig vs 200 gig difference. JudyK (8813)
