385696 2005-09-03 10:47:00 We have recently recieved a replacement Samsung 40G Hard drive to replace a faulty Maxtor. We have always had a small (don't laugh) 6.4G Harddrive we just use for backing up important stuff. However when I plug both the new Samsung in (as master) and the Old 6.4G (as slave) the Samsung disappears and the 6.4G is the only drive recognised by BIOS. still as a slave.

The Samsung will run fine by itself
Any ideas why this is? Can hard drives Conflict with each other?
Any help would be great thanks

385698 2005-09-03 10:59:00 It seems to me all the jumpers are fine, even went so far as to actually follow samsungs installation guide :) The 6.4G shouldn't need to be changed any way, it always was and always will be a slave. mattyjb (7993)
385699 2005-09-03 20:56:00 Are you using 80 or 40 wire IDE cables? You haven't set the jumpers to cable select?

Have a read of this IDE how-to (www.mikeshardware.com) to check your setup. :)

385700 2005-09-04 00:26:00 What is the make of the 6.4 GB drive?
Could the Maxtor Installation Software have a disagreement with the Samsung installation software?
Presume you have tried a new 80 wire 40 pin IDE cable with the master and slave using the right connections, although this may appear unnecessary.

385701 2005-09-04 03:04:00 Be very careful with the jumpering. Some drives need more infoprmation than others. Look for a setting like "Master with slave present" Graham L (2)
