385739 2005-09-04 00:25:00 Probably. Orcon's static IP for residential customers is a pain in the arse.
Why is a static IP a pain? If you run your own little web server, or host the ocassional game, it is great & if you don't then it makes absolutely no difference to you whether or not you have a static IP.

385740 2005-09-04 03:31:00 Well, if I found your IP and realised you were vulnerable to XYZ, I could start harassing you. YOu diconnect after a day and reconnect then you've still got the same IP. Makes a crackers life easier than having to re-scan for another vulnerable machine.

On the contrary, makes life easier hosting games etc

Man, I want a static IP!

385741 2005-09-04 06:20:00 it makes absolutely no difference to you whether or not you have a static IP.Course it does. What Chill said, plus if you get banned from a forum then you have to use another ISP account to get back in :D Greg (193)

385743 2005-09-04 11:41:00 Dynamic IP adress is more secure. At Actrix domestic customers can have a static IP address.

385744 2005-09-05 09:15:00 Hi Lizard
I would suggest that you seriously consider buying your modem from either your ISP provider or the company you bought your computer off. I started to get into a three way debate with the ISP provider, the computer seller and the modem seller each saying that the problem must lie in one of the other two camps. If you only have two groups debating then it cuts out the third possibility !!

Save on petrol too !!!

IMHO:

Not Dynalink, Not D-Link, and the free ISP one's are usually crap.

385746 2005-09-05 10:21:00 I have a Netgear DG834G and its been brilliant. Personally, I wouln't take the crappy little free modem from an ISP as they tend to be very limited. You will likely out-gorw it quickly and end up looking for a new one.

An ADSL router with a 4 port switch is reccomended if you think you'll ever want to connect more than one device. I guess if your ISP offers such a device for a slight premium (upgrade from the freebie) then it might be worth it - they can give you advice on how to set it up and should support it to some extent.

385747 2005-09-05 10:33:00 Dynalink RTA-770W is a wireless router, I have two desktops and a laptop connected to it, dead simple to set up and excellent support. peejay (1396)
