386611 2005-09-07 00:37:00 Hi Peoples,
Just wondering if the very cheap sempron box that can take future athlon and has slot for better GPU is a good way to go...

While i would love to spend $3000 and get bells and whistles need to get budget very low :)

cheers
Pete

386612 2005-09-07 00:51:00 Thats a bit vague, besides.....current Semprons use either socket A or Socket 754, neither of which will have Athlons availble to fit in the future, all new Athlons are 939, with praticly no Socket A's available, and limited (with no new models being made) Socket 754...... I might be better to pay up and get a P4

386614 2005-09-07 05:13:00 Probally better off getting an Athlon 64 3000, faster, cheaper, and better technology then the P4. Metla (12)
386615 2005-09-07 05:35:00 I second that. pctek (84)
386616 2005-09-07 05:55:00 i love atholon processors and have grown to dislike pentiums... then again i dont know much... CorbinH (37)
386617 2005-09-07 08:23:00 better technology then the P4.How's that? Greg (193)
386618 2005-09-07 08:42:00 How's that? The AMD64 CPU architecture. It has its own memory controller rather than using the north bridge like the 32-bit CPU's. It can also address 2^64 bytes of address space (vs 2^32) and has multiple HyperTransport buses which apparently is pretty cool  . Hmm ... OK, well that is about all I can remember on the presentation given recently at the Auckland Linux User Group (LUG) meeting on AMD64 architecture. :p

Basically the technology is better, whether you need that technology right now is a different question. :D

386619 2005-09-07 08:49:00 When they fix the drivers you can also move to windows 64, which will give you massive memory capability. netchicken (4843)

I have read all posts up to the time and date.

Future Athlons may be out. You can buy an Asus A7V400-MX Motherboard which will take a Sempron CPU up to a least a 2800+ and an Athlon 3200+

I know this for a fact as I have inserted both CPUs into this motherboard.

The motherboard has onboard Graphics and sound and costs about $100.

One AGP slot and three PCI slots are available.

You can then insert a sound card or AGP graphics. I use both here.
When you mention GPU I think you are taliking about a AGP graphic card

As other people have mentioned you can consider a 939 pin board with an AMD CPU for making things faster in the future.

There is no such thing as being future proof.
