386086 2005-09-05 07:19:00 Hi guys,
A friend of mine recently bought a MSI notebook from Playtech. She noticed that one of the USB ports in the notebook was not working.

She finally found the time to take the notebook back to Playtech to fix today. She was told that the motherboard needed to be replaced because "one of the metal/copper contacts was not in properly" She was asked to pay a $30.00 labour fee to get it repaired because they said it was physical damage.

My friend was in a very urgent need of the notebook so she just paid the $30.00 even though she knew she didn't damage it. She did however, question why she needed to pay $30.00 for the repair. She was told that the technician was 70% sure it was physical damage.

It took them about an 1 hour 30 min before she got her notebook back. After she took it back, she noticed it "felt different" to her old one (must be the special female senses). She discovered the windows authentication sticker was slightly peeled at the corners (probably from use but the stickers were all in perfect condition prior to the repair). She also told me the notebook looks a bit old compared to her "original" notebook.

We compared the serial number of her notebook on the back with the receipt. We found that the two did not match. So I'm guessing that they just gave her another "used" notebook. Is there anyway for my friend to get her $30.00 back or at least get her "old" notebook back fixed?

cliff notes:
Notebook USB broken, quite sure already broken when purchased
Took back to shop to fix
Charged $30.00 for labour fee because of "physical damage"
notice that the notebook is not the same notebook after repair

Sorry about the long post

Thanks alot

386087 2005-09-05 07:51:00 There are businesses that do this??

My first step would be to take the notebook back to whoever repaired it, and ask for her old notebook back (fixed).

If they tell you the notebook she has, is her old notebook, show them the receipt of original purchase (I presume the receipt you have is of original purchase) and make sure they note the discrepancy of the serial number.

Or photocopy the original receipt and show them the copy (but have the original nearby in case they say its a fraud)

Can I ask who the business is (Mods: are we allowed to name businesses here)

386088 2005-09-05 07:52:00 Did they make any comment as to the fact that they were swapping the notebook for another one at all?
Or any comment that this was a loan machine whilst hers was repaired?

I would assume that they have infact swapped her hard drive into the other notebook otherwise you'd be saying all her data has gone as well.

How long has she had HER notebook that she purchased from them?

If they didn't say this was a loan machine and they have in fact tried to do a switch then my thoughts are that what they have done is illegal or at best unethical. Especially if the machine is still under guarantee, bearing in mind the consumer guarantees act applies as well. If they have replaced a "Brand New" notebook with a 2nd hand one then i'd be asking more questions about exactly what has gone on and what's currently happening.
Otherwise demand your rights from the manager or take them to court.

386089 2005-09-05 07:53:00 Hell yeah, take the notebook & receipt back and tell them to shove it bigtime
And while you're there tell them you want a brand spanking new one or it's off to Fair Go

386090 2005-09-05 08:30:00 This really does not sound like Playtech. Although I do not work for them, I do know a few of them quite well. Take a photocopy of the receipt with original receipt and ask to speak to Paul straight. The owners would never ever do anything like what's being described. Inform them that bad publicity is out on this forum! ... and if the worst comes to the worst, do whatever you would with any other retailer -legal actions. techie (7177)
386091 2005-09-05 09:21:00 Sorry, I shouldn't have mentioned the dealer . Can't quite find how to edit that out . But yes, I have experienced quite good service from them also . But I just wanted an explanation about the different serial numbers as it is quite suspicious and is it reasonable that they have charged my friend .

Mods, could u please edit out the dealer's name please

Thanks

386094 2005-09-06 10:44:00 I see someone made an account using Playtech as a user name earlier today, they don't seem to have posted.... Metla (12)
386095 2005-09-07 05:39:00 Ok, it has been clarified now. Apparently they did switch the notebook but it was to a new one.

Apparently the motherboard was mounted onto the chasis itself so it's fairly hard to change the motherboard without replacing the whole system.

The reason for the slightly peeled sticker was because they stuck the original windows authentication sticker onto the new system.

The same data was still on the notebook because they put the old HDD into the new notebook.

I suppose it was due to bad communication about with what was done in the repair. However dealer has apologized to friend for not informing her and have said they will ensure something like this does not happen again.
