386330 2005-09-07 06:58:00 Hmm, more windows paranoia?

Most problems coming from downloads are in fact spyware. Very seldom will you get a self executing virus within a download (unless its from Kazaa, and even then most of those have to be executed).

You will usually also get viruses from a website. As soon as you enter the website, the spyware/virus will be executed via your browser, and nestle itself quite happily into your cookies and registry.

I used to download quite a few hksac, cckras (you figure out the words, I dont want Google getting them) etc from sites like asta$$@(*&)_ and other places... most of which contain a virus or spyware of one sort or another. I never caught one, unless I forgot to scan the file (usually zip) and executed the contents.
Most antiviruses these days can scan a file (zipped or otherwise) and let you know whether it contains a virus.

Downloading all apps files you require to a partition is a great idea (one I have been doing for ages), but downloading to a partition just to be scanned before they get transferred to another drive is out and out paranoia.

386331 2005-09-07 07:37:00 Thanks Jen for your instructions, but where do i find " preferances > downloads" ?Sorry, I was being a bit vague as I know that in Windows the Preference dialog box has a different location to that under Linux. However, a quick search shows that you should find it under Tools > Options. :) Jen (38)
386332 2005-09-07 17:59:00 Thanks for sharing your knowledge guys,

Like all things, its so easy when you know how, i wouldn't have thought to look in options, excuse my inexperience, thanks Jen

Tazz, thanks for your well detailed info, thats excactly what i need at the moment, the only thing i don't understand is, why do you say its a good idea to save your apps files into a partition, what benefit is there in
doing that ?

thanks

I think it because they're then quarantined . If some nasty does come in and create havoc it will only be in that partition . (I think) . . . . . . . . . . m

TankFor 2 reasons; if I ever format my C: drive, all applications etc I am likely to use are on another partition, I know exactly where they are. I also backup things like my bookmarks etc to this partition (as well as to CD).
The other reason.. if you are like me and you have a network setup, the other computer can also access this entire partition for the above reasons.

Incidentally, it has nothing to do with 'if I catch a virus'. If I do catch a virus that kills my C: partition, I have the skills to remove it. But even if I didn't have the skills, I would just format (because I back everything up regularly)
