386264 2005-09-05 12:38:00 I wanna get me an external Hardrive so i can plug it into my laptop when i'm at uni.

But whats best - a true external HDD, or a internal one in an external bracket?
And whats faster - Firewire or USB?
ANd how fast is it - could u play a game off an external Hdd?
or is it best for storage only?
Cheers

386265 2005-09-05 13:00:00 Both are pretty much identical, being internal in an external bracket... Better off just buying the parts (Cheaper).

Firewire is 400mbps
Firewire2 is 800mbps (Dont know of any cheap external cases for that price thou)
USB2.0 is 480mbps

You can use it just like a normal HDD, fine :)

386266 2005-09-05 21:07:00 I would get a 2.5" External HDD housing and purchase a notebook HDD for it.
Just make sure you get one that can get power from the USB / PS/2 port so you don't need to carry around an extra power pack for it.

386267 2005-09-06 05:16:00 depends on how what you want to store. could get a USB memory stick but dollar for dollar I went for an external hardrive. I went on Trademe and scored a 40G 2.5" harddrive (with warranty) for $100 and a USB 2.0 2.5" case for $31. The case came with a USB y-adaptor to get enough supply for the drive from my notebook. recognised by XP Home.

Hope this helps
