387031 2005-09-09 00:24:00 Hi all :), its been awhile since i have checked into F1, nice to be back ;) .

I have come across a problem on a friends Mums system, which seems to have me beat, so hopefully some of you Javascript experts will be able to help me (as i am not very up on the workings of javascript to be honest, just the basics settings) .

Her system is a pakard bell, haven't got the exact specs with me here at the moment, but its XP SP2 and she is using I . E . (I tried using my portable "Firefox" however same problems with the page) .

The problem became apparent when she decided to buy "bejewelled2" from here

Real Arcade (http://www . realarcade . com)

As you can see, the "Downlaod RealArcade Now" red button, should open the javascript window to download, she can't even get it (the button) displaying of course . I have been to this site no probs on my systems, so it appears its not the website .

I have checked all her "Internet Options" have everything that should be enabled etc . . . Cleared the temps and all the basics along those lines, i have checked its not a pop-up blocker, i have also checked firewall setting as a long shot (but as it isn't just this site anyway . . . ), i downloaded the latest "windows script 5 . 6", that made no difference either - I thought i was onto something the other day when i found she had "winoptimiser" installed, which also had a popup blocked too, then found a yahoo toolbar popup blocker as well, however neither of these made any difference as they were already both off .

I have of course done several searches and find most cases of this seem to be rectified with the "windows script 5 . 6" installed . . .

Basically i am at a loss as to what to try next, any ideas appreciated please, hopefully its something basic i have missed ;) .

As i said earlier i am not very up on the workings of Javascript and Java - but have found alot of useful info researching this, i do believe that this is actually a "javascript" problem (Am i right there?), but along the way i found that she didn't have Sun Java VM installed, so i installed that just to cover bases . . .

Any ideas appreciated please

387032 2005-09-09 00:34:00 So, did u download Sun Java 1.5.0.4?? Its about 15.5 mb.

SP2 doesnt come with Java, only SP1 does.

java.sun.com The 2nd option.

JRE 5.0 update 4. Is this the file you downloaded??

387033 2005-09-09 00:48:00 Yep, thats the version i installed Speedy :). Initially i thought, that would solve it, as i knew that SP2 needed Sun Java, however as i said, i have since done a bit more research on the difference between Java and Javascript. Or do you believe the problem does lie with the Sun Java side of things perhaps? J ZEP (336)
387034 2005-09-09 00:57:00 Hmm I just tried clicking on that download realarcade now button, it worked.

If the pic isnt showing at all, go to tools / internet options / advanced / multimedia. Is show pictures ticked?

Does it show the boxes on the site?? Where the pics SHOULD be??

If not, ticking show pictures should fix it, so u see pics.

387035 2005-09-09 01:57:00 Thanks Speedy, yes, the link works fine and page displays fine on all other systems i have tried it on too, and browsers... what made me think it was perhaps more system related, was the same happened with my portable "firefox" too on her system? I am not there at the moment, but i am sure i checked those settings that you suggested and i reset everything to defaults at one stage along the way, which also should have done it.
If i hold the mouse over the area where it should show the "download" button and click, it will render the new window open, but just won't allow the page to be displayed/or download. I really don't know what else to try, as i said earlier, i thought the firewall was perhaps blocking it, but it doen't seem to be just that page IIRC.
The only other thing i can think of is that perhaps there has been something installed at some stage, which has been uninstalled and caused corrupted files perhaps? I have queried her about this, and it appears she has let different people play around with it alot unfortunataley and being a newbie she doens't really know what half the programs she has got "installed" do, let alone ones other people have "installed/uninstalled", lol.

Cheers

387036 2005-09-09 04:06:00 What firewall does the pc run ? Also I have been having problems with sites that use java the way I fixed my problems was to remove java from control panel and revert back to java jre1.5.0.01. I know it may not be the best idea but hey it works for me. :)

387037 2005-09-09 09:29:00 Hi Overdrive, its using the XP firewall, so nothing too difficult to check there.
Yes, i found i had to revert to an older version of Sun Java for my win 2000 sys too, maybe i should try an older version of Sun Java for her system?
But what i was hoping somebody could please clarify for me is:-
Is it actually using Sun Java VM for that paticular page anyway?, as you usually get the icon in sys tray when its using Java - i was under the impression it was just "Javascript" - so i would love somebody to enlighten me here, on this paticular aspect please!!!!
As everything i have read in the past few days points to the differences in Java and Javascript and the fact that alot of people confuse the two or think they are the same thing? If you hold the mouse over the link - it tells you its "javascript" to render a new window/download.
To put it simply - can somebody tell me if using "javascript" to open a link/download has anything to do with the Sun Java? Just so i know if my understanding of Javascript and Java are indeed right? As i believed this problem was more to do with the actual Javascript?? Confused totally now, lol.

Cheers

387038 2005-09-09 09:51:00 It shouldnt matter, whether u use MS Java or Sun Java .

I use Sun Java, (since SP2 is installed), and it works fine on that site .

Just as long as you have either installed, it SHOULD work on any site .
