387155 2005-09-09 07:03:00 hi i've just upgraded my cpu,motherboard,graphics card . AMD3000+,Gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939,Pixel View 6600GT AGP, but i still get slight freezes playing computer games .

I'm using my older Seagate 40GB 5400RPM drive, and 2 sticks of 512MB DDR266 memory running in dual channel mode .

Would my performance be better upgrading to a 7200RPM IDE drive? or SATA one? or changing to 2 sticks of 512MB DDR400? Thanks .

387156 2005-09-09 07:46:00 Your motherboard supports up to 4GB of 400 DDR RAM.
I would upgrade the RAM first (maybe 2*512MB, maybe higher if you want).
Then upgrade to 7200 harddrive. If the games are being stored on the harddrive however, think about upgrading the harddrive first.

Your motherboard supports SATA, consider buying a SATA harddrive (if/when you do buy one)

Give Memtest a run before outlaying any dosh. A gig of ram should get you by in most circumstances.

Yep fresh install of Windows, had problems with SP2, it restarting all the time.
What does memtest do again? Haven't tried that.

Yes well would there be much performance difference between 1GB of DDR266 RAM and DDR400 RAM? Well between that and a 7200RPM, 8MB cache SATA Drive? I'm just deciding which comes first, put up with the slower RAM, and upgrade the harddrive, or vice versa.

387160 2005-09-10 13:09:00 Make sure you have updated graphic card drivers and sound card drivers first .

Then do disk cleanup, and a disk defragmenter .

See how that goes and if need/want to then:

1 . Sata harddrive 120 GB or bigger . (Harddrive first because 40 GB is small today and you will need the space later on anyway and after that the ram . )

2 . Ram 2 x 512 ddr 400 .

387161 2005-09-10 20:21:00 yep everything has been updated, graphics, sound, motherboard, disk defrag. Is the windows one ok for a disk defrag? or could anyone suggest a better one to use? Just looking at racing games, and they seem to run fine.

And one other question, which would i notice more difference, going to a 120GB SATA 7200RPM 8MB Cache Drive? or the 1GB RAM (x2 512MB) ?

387163 2005-09-11 03:25:00 use but that means trying out a whole range of different of free ones, is there any, that you would recommend? or use? Yeah well, think i'll wait for a few more games before upgrading as short on $. Have about 20GB free, so that'll be alright for another half a dozen games.
