387127 2005-09-08 23:41:00 i have a horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach that i have a dying HDD,

It is a western digital maxtor 80gb configured as secondary drive (slave) on primary IDE channel, currently holding mp3 collection (i can lose that, and some system baccup files that i didn't get around to burning off to cd/dvd) with 2 40gb partitions and just used for data storeager, non os installed on that drive

when i plug it in (power molex) it starts to click (i guess as platters start rotating) 3 clicks pause 3 clicks etc and after starting windows, the drive isn't recognised by xp professional

really, all i want to do is retrieve the data (if i can (free/cheap?)) then i thought about relegating it to doorstop duties, have a new seagate baracuda 200gb waiting to take its place

ne comment/ideas on getting this data off this hdd or is it a case of too little too late terry, suck it up, dry my eyes princess and get the f*** on with it

387129 2005-09-09 01:25:00 Good post, made me laugh, that paragraph at the end.

I dunno, maybe you could try to "install new hardware" if xp isn't recognising the drive. Is that the problem? You can't open the drive?

You could try Ghost. Use the switch to ignore errors. If not, just go with the much better quality excellent Seagate you are getting.

yeah, xp doesn't "see" the drive under "my computer"

will try the ole startup disk and see if i can access the drive that way thecopy everything over to the primary drive (which i have backed everything up to my other (new) pc for burning to dvd = 35gb of collected digital junk that i just can't do without)

if i can get the data off great and then it gets the flight test out the window

will look into ghost

its kinda like a record player with fluff on the needle (i think, hopefully you know what i mean??) something corrupted on a platter or the arm bent stuck (trust me, i have thought long and hard about kicking it!! :-)

387133 2005-09-09 02:19:00 Ghost, or some such drive imaging app should do the task.

I've found a live linux CD or diagnostic/rescue CD are much more likely to retain access to dying drives than windows. If you happen to dual boot with Linux, it should work equally well as the former, but then if you did, you'd probably know by now, eh!

387135 2005-09-09 03:08:00 wrap it up in several layers of gladwrap then stuff it in the freezer for a couple of hours.......then remove it from the freezer and unwrap it then try to ghost it or otherwise retrieve the data........it MAY work. drcspy (146)

she-it, i'll try anything once, if it don't work, i'll file off the rough bits, give it a couple layers of vas, and ...... lol, there's a joke about billy the kid playing the piano in there somewhere,

will put this solution as number 3 on the list
